BASF and Stockmeier Move Toward Sustainable Polyurethane

Creating polyurethane binders from mass-balanced isocyanates completes Stockmeier Urethanes' efforts to promote a more circular economy.

BASF and Stockmeier Urethanes USA, Inc. announced commercial production of Stobielast® S polyurethane binders for playground and recreational surface coatings produced with 100% domestically manufactured Biomass Balance (BMB) Lupranate® methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI). BASF produces BMB MDI at its Verbund facility in Geismar, Louisiana. Representing a significant milestone in the surface coatings industry, this achievement underscores both companies' commitment to a more sustainable future.

The use of BMB Lupranate in the polyurethane production process enables Stockmeier Urethanes to benefit from more sustainable solutions without requiring reformulations, new manufacturing equipment, or changes to the supply chain. Creating polyurethane binders from mass-balanced isocyanates completes Stockmeier Urethanes' efforts to promote environmental stewardship and a more circular economy.

The Stobielast S product line also includes water-based and solvent-free coatings, products certified GREENGUARD and GREENGUARD GOLD, and products labeled USDA Certified Biobased.
