AKO Akü Leads in Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Production

AKO Akü operates its factory according to the "Zero Waste" principle, controlling all waste and completely preventing the release of harmful substances into the environment. With its environmentally conscious structure, the integrated battery manufacturing, plastic injection and battery smelting facilities rank among the five most advanced facilities in Europe and support sustainable production targets, setting an environmentally friendly example in the sector.

AKO Akü within AKO Group carries out domestic production of AKO Prestige and Turbo brand batteries in Çankırı, while leading the sector with its lead recycling facility. With a "Zero Waste" approach, AKO Akü enables the recovery of lead-acid batteries; within the factory premises, it manages solid, liquid and gas waste processes with fully automated systems. This modern facility with Industry 4.0 characteristics stands out as Turkey's only facility with a "Desulfurization" unit, which is mandatory in Europe, and presents a strong model in terms of environmental responsibility.

Used "lead-acid batteries" are collected with licensed equipment as specified in regulations and can be processed at licensed recovery facilities to be converted into reusable raw material. However, when sufficient technology is not used in this conversion process, significant amounts of solid, liquid and gas waste can be generated. Pointing out the situation that emerges from the insufficiency of technologies used in facilities, S. Safa Özcan, Member of the Board of Directors of AKO Group, made the following statement on the matter: "The technology used in the lead-acid battery recycling process is critical in reducing environmental impact. As AKO Group, in our recovery facility equipped with the most advanced and latest technologies, we do not leave any of our waste in nature; we recover it into the system. Our aim is to leave a cleaner world for future generations by contributing to nature."

We are one of the first five facilities in Europe with high production standards

Noting that all of the battery manufacturing, smelting and plastic injection production facilities located in Çankırı operate with Industry 4.0 technology, Özcan emphasized that they have the most advanced battery production facilities under one roof in Turkey; "We are one of the first five facilities in Europe with these high production standards." he said.

With annual production capacity of 5 million batteries, AKO Akü recovers scrap batteries according to the zero waste principle with an annual processing capacity of 30,000 tonnes of scrap batteries at its recovery facility, thus returning them to the economy. AKO Akü integrated production facilities stand out as Turkey's only battery factory with a desulfurization system known as BAT (Best Available Techniques) in the European Union and MET (Best Available Technique) in Turkey.
