Natural and Clean Essences: Creating Fragrances to Meet Conscious Consumer Demand
When it comes to raw materials in a perfumer's palette, there are two important categories: natural and synthetic.
Both categories are essential for fragrances and play an important role in creating some of the world's leading scents. There is much discussion and current conversation about the natural ingredient category. There is something special about natural ingredients; they have a long and fascinating history and diverse applications.
CPL Aromas combined its experience in natural fragrances, market knowledge and regulatory expertise to build our Naturals Platform. This platform is a classification system where CPL works with customers to determine what they expect from using natural ingredients and offers practical solutions for creating 100% natural fragrances.
"Much of what we do is inspired by nature, and synthetic substitutes rarely provide the same effect in a fragrance." (Tim Gage, Senior Perfumer, CPL)
Natural fragrance components are mainly derived from aromatic plants - a single plant can contain hundreds of aromatic elements that make up its aroma. Raw materials come from parts of the plant, roots, leaves, bark, etc., and fragrance components are the volatile oils, absolutes, or concretes (depending on the extraction method) into which these raw materials are transformed. These fragrance components sometimes have a very different scent profile from the original natural plant's aroma.
Grasse, a town on the French Riviera, is known as the birthplace of perfumery and is also a popular region where plants used for fragrances are cultivated. The Mediterranean climate there, seasonal temperature variations and abundant water make it perfect for crop growth. However, in today's modern world, with developing technology and climate change, plants used in perfumery are now grown all over the world. This has helped exponentially expand the natural raw material perfumery palette.
"Perfumery is an art created with a very broad and diverse palette." (Nez, The Great Book of Fragrance)
Natural ingredients are impressive and can truly elevate a fragrance, giving it variety and a soul. However, as demand for natural raw materials creates pressure on supply, we must think responsibly to ensure our products are produced, grown, manufactured or sourced in a way that will not have a negative impact on people or the planet.
As part of our Responsible Sourcing Policy, our natural procurement officers develop fair, sustainable, long-term partnerships with suppliers and commit to the quality, transparency and sustainability of our fragrance ingredients, looking at material sourcing, production, social and environmental impacts.
"Natural ingredients are relatable, rich, beautiful and the true essence of nature." (Romain Keller, Perfumer, CPL)
Another trend that has increased in recent years is the clean movement, thanks to the rise of conscious consumerism and the global wellness industry.
Consumers have become more insistent on ingredient transparency, seeking ingredient and product safety information, and expecting brands to provide details about where and how an ingredient is sourced and processed.
The "Clean Movement" has affected purchasing habits of consumers worldwide, and this movement is likely to continue as consumers seek safety and assurance from brands and companies.
There is no clear definition of clean, and as a result, CPL Aromas has created its own definition for our perfumers to follow when creating clean essences. It is important not to create negativity around certain ingredients, but instead to base the term "clean" on the notion of being transparent and conscious in accordance with consumer demand.
Interestingly, natural essences often cannot fall under the "clean" claim due to allergens in natural ingredients. However, natural essences will always provide a piece of nature while maintaining their special qualities.
We can safely say that Natural and Clean Trends will only increase as demand for safety, preservation and wellness increases.
