Adhesive Specialist Lohmann GmbH & Co. KG Celebrates 170th Anniversary Over its 170-year history, Lohmann has become a global manufacturer in adhesive technology. Today, "Adhesion Engineers" are represented not only in Germany but also in the USA, China and India. The company focuses on functional adhesive tapes, which combine adhesive strength with additional functions, enabling Lohmann customers to advance their innovations. "Made in Neuwied" adhesive solutions are now used worldwide in vehicles, mobile phones, household appliances, windows and doors, the printing sector, portable blood glucose meters and COVID-19 tests. These are adhesive solutions found in products you cannot see at first glance but that millions of people use every day. Lohmann GmbH & Co. KG will be 170 years old this year. A family company calling itself "Adhesion Engineers," Lohmann has continuously developed over this long period and successfully carried adhesive technology into the future. The company, based in Neuwied, has a portfolio that primarily includes innovative high-tech adhesive tapes. Managing Partner Dr. Jörg Pohlman and Dr. Carsten Herzhoff, descendants in direct line from founder August Lohmann and now leading the company in the fifth generation, state: "Our adhesive tapes not only bond, but also assume electrically conductive or sealing functions." In 1998, the Adhesive and Bonding Technology and Medical divisions were separated. The medical products sector was transferred to what is now Lohmann & Rauscher, in which Lohmann continues to hold a 50 percent stake. Since then, Lohmann Adhesive Bonding Technology has focused on technical adhesive tapes. The Lohmann-Koester subsidiary can celebrate its 50th anniversary this year: it has managed the hygiene business unit (closure systems for baby diapers) since 1991.

International Expansion

Dr. Jörg Pohlman states, "Today we are represented at 25 international locations worldwide." Lohmann opened its first US location in 1991 in Hebron, Kentucky. Another was later added in Orange, Virginia. Among the company's departmental capabilities are hot melts, acrylates and rubber adhesives as well as coating, along with high-precision high-speed rotary die cutting. In Asia, demand for innovative and sustainable adhesive solutions is growing steadily. Lohmann's Chinese subsidiary in Tianjin was established in 2002.

TEC Center and TwinMelt® Technology Marked Milestones

Another milestone in 2016 was the opening of the TEC Center, an innovative technology center at the Neuwied facility. A unique feature is the TwinMelt® technology, which enables 100 percent solvent-free coating of adhesive tapes. Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jörg Pohlman states, "And that is also where we see our focus and our success for the future, which is offering our customers more innovative and at the same time more sustainable products."
