Egg Prices Fall During Ramadan on Production Oversupply

Egg Prices Fall During Ramadan on Production Oversupply

İbrahim Afyon, Chairman of the Central Union of Egg Producers (YUM-BİR), stated that the fund deduction implemented last year, along with increased production and export restrictions, created a supply surplus in the domestic market, putting pressure on producer prices. As a result, the price increase traditionally seen during Ramadan did not occur this year.

Ibrahim Afyon, Chairman of the Egg Producers Central Union (YUM-BİR), said that fund cuts applied last year, increased production and export restrictions created oversupply in the domestic market and pressured producer prices. For this reason, the traditional price increases seen during Ramadan did not occur this year.

Afyon noted that eggs, which made headlines with price increases last year, entered this Ramadan period without price increases. Recalling that egg prices typically show some movement during Ramadan periods, Afyon said that price increases were not expected this year due to oversupply.

Producer prices under pressure
Large eggs, which sold for TRY 5.45 in April last year and TRY 5.10 in September 2025, are currently trading at around TRY 4.10 at wholesale. Afyon noted that producers can barely cover their costs with current feed prices and in some cases are forced to sell below cost:
"An average of 250 grams of feed equivalent is needed per egg. A producer who has a cost of TRY 4 per egg can sell it at TRY 3–3.5, and at TRY 4.10 at wholesale."

Afyon also emphasized that price increases sometimes create a false perception in retail prices and should not be attributed to the entire sector:
"The reasons for shelf price increases should be examined carefully. Were sales at a loss made earlier, or is there Ramadan opportunism? Especially under names like organic, free-range or village eggs, high prices can be demanded. These profiteers should not be attributed to all producers."

Wholesale and retail prices at reasonable levels
Noting that major national supermarket chains are running high-discount campaigns, Afyon said shelf prices are generally at reasonable levels. A crate of eggs that was around TRY 250 last year is now trading between TRY 150–170. Organic free-range eggs in 10-packs are being sold in the TRY 88–115 range.
