Securshield™ 500 was developed in response to Europe's food packaging industry efforts to transition to more sustainable alternatives. AkzoNobel has developed Securshield™ 500, a new generation metal packaging coating series free of PVC and bisphenol (BPXni*) for tinplate manufacturers. The easy-open end coatings of the Securshield™ 500 series are designed to help tinplate manufacturers and their customers meet current and potential regulatory requirements with a product group that is more sustainable and delivers significantly improved performance compared to today's organosol-based alternatives. From the perspective of coil coaters, an important advantage of the coating is that it integrates seamlessly into existing production processes and enables food sector tinplate manufacturers to use a single technology to meet changing needs. Tinplate packaging manufacturers thus benefit from the flexibility and working capital advantages that come with having a single product suitable for a wide variety of metal food packaging. Chris Bradford, Marketing Director for AkzoNobel Industrial Paints, said: "The Securshield 500 series is the latest example of how we work with manufacturers to develop meaningful solutions to the challenges they face. We are committed to a future where bisphenols are not used to protect the metal packaging sector. The new product range was developed in response to changing regulations and the food packaging industry in Europe's efforts to transition to more sustainable alternatives." The launch of the Securshield 500 series follows the recent market introduction of AccelshieldTM 700, a styrene-free and BPXni beverage can interior coating, and AccelstyleTM 100 and 200 overprint varnishes for two-piece aluminium beverage cans free of bisphenol, styrene and PFAS. These new products are being introduced at a challenging time for coil coaters, can manufacturers and their customers. As the European Commission continues to phase out the use of bisphenols, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), NGOs and retailers continue to raise concerns about plastics used in food packaging. *BPXni definition indicates that bisphenol or bisphenol compounds have not been intentionally added to the product or used in the product's manufacture.
