Turkey Steps Up Storage Activities to Meet Natural Gas Needs
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Fatih Dönmez will lay the foundation stone for the Tuz Gölü Natural Gas Storage Expansion Project. Upon completion, 48 new wells will be drilled to increase the facility's storage capacity to approximately 5.4 billion m3 and its production capacity to 80 million m3 per day. This will expand the facility's storage capacity while enhancing its gas delivery capability to the system. The facility is intended to provide infrastructure capable of storing 20 percent of Turkey's annual natural gas demand. The target is to reach an initial capacity of 1.2 billion m3 of gas in the shortest possible time. Of this, 600 million m3 will constitute gas delivery capacity to the system. The daily volume of annual natural gas delivery capacity to the system will be at the level of 20 million m3. The largest share of funds allocated to BOTAŞ in the 2019 Investment Programme will be used for Tuz Gölü.
In terms of the number of natural gas storage projects planned to be built in Turkey, the country ranks fifth after Italy, United Kingdom, Romania and Poland, and second in total capacity after the United Kingdom.
Upon completion of the Tuz Gölü Natural Gas Storage Expansion Project, 48 new wells will be drilled to bring the facility's total storage capacity to approximately 5.4 billion cubic metres and its total production capacity to 80 million cubic metres per day. In this way, natural gas will be available to citizens under all circumstances.
The project, which involves international organizations such as the World Bank and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, is being carried out by Chinese and Turkish investors.
With the completion of the Tuz Gölü Natural Gas Underground Storage Project, the North Marmara Natural Gas Storage Expansion Project (Phase III) and the Saros FSRU Project, natural gas storage will reach 11 billion cubic metres by 2023, with 20 percent of total consumption being stored.
