Turkish Ytong Continues to Lead in Energy Efficiency

Insufficient insulation, which stands out as one of the major problems in residential buildings in Turkey, is both reducing living comfort and creating a serious energy burden on the country's economy. According to TÜİK data, 31.3% of the population faces problems due to leaking roofs and damp walls, while 30.2% are confronted with heating issues stemming from poor insulation. This situation underscores once again the importance of effective thermal insulation applications in residential buildings to reduce energy costs.

The "Buildings Thermal Insulation Rules Standard – TS 825:2024," which entered into force as of 1 April 2025, is being evaluated as a historic turning point in Turkey's energy efficiency strategy. Prepared under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change and with contributions from the Turkish Standards Institute, the new standard carries major significance in terms of reducing energy losses, improving comfort, and achieving sustainability goals.

Fethi Hinginar, Vice Chair of the Board of Türk Ytong, made the following statement on the matter:

New Standard Alters Technical Requirements in Insulation
While a significant portion of energy losses in buildings stems from external walls, the quality of building materials plays a critical role. At this point, Türk Ytong's autoclaved aerated concrete blocks provide high thermal insulation and offer solutions that meet the new TS 825:2024 requirements. Similarly, Multipor thermal insulation boards with low lambda values contribute to reducing energy losses.

Key Changes in the New TS 825:2024 Standard
Comprehensive updates were made to thermal insulation and energy performance criteria with the new standard. The main changes are as follows:

-In addition to heating energy calculation, cooling energy calculation has become mandatory.

-U values for walls, floors, roofs and windows have been reduced.

-Turkey's degree-day zones have been increased from 4 to 6.

-Solar radiation, thermal bridges, monthly calculation method, air change coefficient by building type, summer-winter design temperatures, indoor relative humidity and heat gain values have been updated.

-Annual energy consumption limits by building type have been redefined.

Economic Returns and Contribution to Sustainability Goals
Reminding that approximately one-third of total energy consumption in Turkey stems from buildings, Fethi Hinginar stated that with the new standard coming into effect, buildings consuming less energy and offering greater comfort will increase. Hinginar also said:

"This process will contribute to reducing energy imports, while causing a decrease in carbon emissions and providing important support for our net-zero targets."

TS 825 Calculations Go Digital: Web-Based Software Now Available
Noting that all stakeholders have significant responsibilities in implementing the new standard, Hinginar emphasized that the producer–implementer–inspector chain must act together in terms of correct material selection and application awareness.

In this context, the Turkey Autoclaved Aerated Concrete Manufacturers Association (TGÜB), of which Türk Ytong is a member, has developed a web-based software platform to enable TS 825 calculations to be performed quickly and accurately. With the system open to all stakeholders, the complex calculations introduced by the new standard can now be easily performed in a digital environment.
