Merck Announces EUR 1 Million Science Award

Merck, one of the world's oldest science and technology companies, celebrated its 350th anniversary with a conference titled 'Curious 2018 Future Insight' focused on scientific curiosity and the future, organized in Darmstadt, the city where it was founded. The company announced a EUR 1 million award program to support scientific research at this event. Founded in 1668 in Darmstadt, Germany, the science and technology company Merck is celebrating its 350th anniversary. As part of this, the firm organized a conference titled 'Curious 2018 Future Insight' focused on scientific curiosity and the future in the same city. 35 scientists, 5 of them Nobel Prize laureates in science, attended the three-day conference. The company, which hosted leading scientists in the field, also announced a EUR 1 million award program.

To Be Awarded Over 35 Years

According to the announcement made by Merck Board Chairman and CEO Stefan Oschmann at the conference, the Future Insight Prize will be awarded over 35 years to research that serves scientific advancement. Future Insight Prize awards will be directed toward research in the areas of health, nutrition and energy. In the health sector, research eliminating resistance to antibacterial agents until 2020, in the nutrition sector, research addressing the food needs of the rapidly growing world population until 2021, and in the energy category, research related to photocatalytic systems until 2022 will be awarded. The awarded research will be selected from innovative work that serves the future of humanity.

First Award to Be Presented in 2019

The first Future Insight Prize will be presented at the 'Curious 2019' program to be held in 2019. Stefan Oschmann stated that with this award they aim to encourage innovative development of basic products and technologies and to bring meaningful perspectives to life for the benefit of humanity. The three-day 'Curious 2018 Future Insight' conference organized by Merck for its 350th anniversary was attended by 35 scientists, 5 of them Nobel Prize laureates in science, whose sessions and presentations were followed with great interest by the audience.
