Final Days to Apply for James Dyson Award The James Dyson Award 2023 invites young inventors to find solutions to real-world problems using design and engineering. The James Dyson Foundation closes applications for the annual engineering competition James Dyson Award at midnight on 19 July. International winners of the award program receive GBP 30,000 in prize money along with global recognition for their inventions, while national winners receive GBP 5,000. Last year, the competition was organized for the first time in Turkey and generated significant interest, receiving over 350 applications from leading Turkish universities between March when applications opened and July when the evaluation process took place. The 2022 national James Dyson Award winner was Selami Erdoğan, 27, a graduate of Middle East Technical University Industrial Design Department and current master's student in the same department, with the "PhysioCircle" project. The "PhysioCircle" project enables chest physiotherapy techniques to be applied correctly and effectively to patients by physiotherapists or family members. The project was awarded GBP 5,000. This year's jury panel for the Turkey leg of the James Dyson Award includes Prof. Dr. Gülay Hasdoğan, Head of METU EÜTB and Industrial Designers Commission of the Chamber of Architects of Turkey; journalist and writer Dr. Fatoş Karahasan; lighting designer and Instructor Ali Berkman in the Architecture and Interior Architecture Department at Fatih Sultan Mehmet University; and a representative group including engineers working at Dyson in various specializations. Since 2005, the competition has supported undergraduate students and new engineering and design graduates with an entrepreneurial spirit to "design something that solves a problem," providing financial support to 390 inventions to date, with over 70 percent of past international winners commercializing their inventions. International winners of the competition are selected each year by Sir James Dyson, and these individuals receive crucial support such as financing and media exposure to implement their ideas in practice. This year's Award also opens the way for inventions related to the earthquakes that occurred in Turkey, giving young engineers an opportunity to demonstrate their awareness of and solutions to situations that could pose risks to our country and world.
