IAEA Delegation Visits World's Only Floating Nuclear Power Plant

Representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the Akademik Lomonosov, the world's first and only floating nuclear power plant built by Russia's state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom and located in the city of Pevek in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

A delegation headed by Mikhail Chudakov, Head of the IAEA Nuclear Energy Division and Deputy Director General, toured the power station site, coastal areas and pier during the visit. The delegation gathered information on the deployment and operation of the plant in the Chaun-Bilibino energy region, while also assessing future plans by Rosenergoatom, a Rosatom subsidiary, for small-scale nuclear power generation.

Russia's Leadership in Small-Scale Nuclear Power
Dmitriy Alekseyenko, Head and Deputy Director of the floating nuclear power plant unit in St. Petersburg, offered the following assessment regarding the meeting:
"The unique knowledge we presented regarding our experience in operating small-scale nuclear power plants does not exist in any other organization. I believe that interest in this facility will increase further in the future, and we are prepared to develop cooperation within the framework of such meetings."

IAEA representatives also shared their vision for the future of small-scale nuclear power plants and the role of floating nuclear power plants in this process.

"The Future Belongs to Small Reactors"
IAEA Deputy Director General Mikhail Chudakov made the following statement following the visit:
"Among small-scale nuclear power plants, the floating nuclear power plant, which is the first and only one of its kind in the world, is currently in a leading position. This situation is increasing interest in implementing similar projects in many countries. The floating nuclear power plant in Chukotka has proven its functionality and efficiency not only in terms of electricity generation but also in meeting the heating needs of Pevek, Russia's northernmost city. Undoubtedly, the future belongs to small reactors, and in this field Russia is outpacing the world today."
