The Key to Energy Transition: Heat Pumps

The heat pump market, which plays a strategic role in energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction, is growing rapidly in Turkey. Baymak, as the market leader, is spearheading this transformation. Baymak General Manager Ülkü Özcan states that the company achieved 100% unit-based growth in heat pumps during 2023–2024, saying "This growth is evidence of our concrete contribution to Turkey's energy transition."

In this period when we feel the impacts of the climate crisis more acutely with each passing day, energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction rank among the common priorities of global economies and all sectors. Buildings in particular account for approximately 34% of global energy consumption and 37% of global carbon emissions. Considering that more than half of the energy used in buildings is spent on heating and cooling systems, the transformation in this area is critical to achieving climate targets. The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive, updated under the European Green Deal, foresees the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels from heating and cooling systems and a 20–22% reduction in energy consumption by 2035. It is at this very point that heat pump technology emerges as an important alternative to fossil fuels in the future.

Three functions in one unit: Heating, cooling and hot water
Baymak heat pumps reduce carbon emissions through their environmentally conscious design while simultaneously meeting heating, cooling and hot water needs. These systems offer a sustainable solution in regions where natural gas infrastructure is absent or energy access is limited. These units provide high comfort through homogeneous heat distribution and represent a suitable alternative for both individual and commercial applications. Additionally, heat pumps operate by drawing 80% of their energy from nature (renewable sources such as air, soil and groundwater) and only 20% from electricity. This system uses electricity not for direct heating but as a medium to transfer heat from natural sources. Compared to conventional gas boilers, it can therefore deliver efficiency gains of between 300% and 400% in terms of cost. In this way, Baymak heat pumps are among the important building blocks of climate-friendly policies and Turkey's energy transition.

Baymak, which continues its investments in energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, holds a leading position in Turkey's heat pump market. With over 500 dealers, more than 2,100 sales points and over 300 authorized service points, the company operates a broad service network and produces environmentally friendly air-conditioning solutions at two manufacturing facilities. Baymak General Manager Ülkü Özcan comments on developments in the heat pump segment as follows: "Baymak heat pumps, which draw most of their energy from nature, stand out for their low energy consumption and high efficiency characteristics. With our air-source heat pumps, we achieve energy savings of up to 80%. As interest in heat pumps from all parts of Turkey increases, we demonstrated strong growth performance in this area last year. Additionally, we achieved significant growth in the heat pump segment during 2023–2024. Looking at the first five months of 2025, our sales continue to grow at the same rates."

Market Reaches 20,000 Units
While heat pump sales in Europe have doubled over the past three years, many countries support this technology through both individual and public incentives. In Turkey, heat pump sales, which stood at approximately 10,000 units in 2020, have exceeded 20,000 units as of 2025. Heat pumps enable both individual and institutional users to reduce their carbon footprint while contributing to making our country's energy-dependent structure more balanced. Today it is estimated that approximately 45,000 households in Turkey use heat pumps. In the medium term, this number is expected to grow rapidly and multiply.
