Germany-based chemical giant BASF SE announced that it has successfully completed the sale of its international optical brightening agents business unit. The sale, carried out as part of the company's portfolio optimization strategy, was officially finalized at the end of February 2026.
BASF SE, the Germany-based chemicals giant, has announced the successful completion of the sale of its international optical brightening agents business unit. The transaction was formally concluded at the end of February 2026 as part of the company's portfolio optimization strategy.
The divested business unit encompasses the production of optical brightening agents used in laundry detergent formulations and includes a production facility in Monthey, Switzerland. Approximately 80 employees are expected to continue operations under the new owner, Catexel. Financial details were kept confidential by both parties.
This transaction is regarded as one of the steps within BASF's strategic "Winning Ways" program to reshape its portfolio. While the company continues to focus on its core business areas, it is divesting the optical brightening agents unit to a more focused structure with the aim of enhancing the segment's potential under new ownership.
Catexel, as the Care Chemicals platform of the International Chemical Investors Group, is positioned as a specialist in producing high-quality specialty chemicals for detergent and cleaning products. Following the acquisition, production and operations continuity at the Monthey facility will be maintained while strengthening growth and innovation-focused activities.
Following the sale, BASF will continue to provide chemistry solutions to the global market for personal care, home and industrial cleaning products with its broad portfolio.
