Introducing a Brand-New, Recoatable Surface Additive: TEGO® Glide 496

Siloxane-based additives are highly important in coating applications because their structures can be varied to provide benefits across a wide range of formulations and chemical compositions. Surfactants and defoamers are among the most commonly known additive classes. However, many different properties can also be derived from siloxane chemistry. Examples include properties related to surface control such as spreading and flow, slip, scratch resistance, and touch characteristics. This broad range of performance properties, combined with the ability to fine-tune the product for system compatibility and adjust surface activity, is enabled by the flexibility inherent in siloxane's natural chemistry.
Evonik possesses both a strong knowledge base as a surface additive supplier and a long history in understanding the general structure-property relationships of siloxane materials and their contribution to performance.
Evonik has developed TEGO® Glide 496, an entirely new and recoatable surface additive, to meet the market's need for advanced solutions by comparing commercially recognized additives and their molecular structures. The key feature of TEGO® Glide 496 is that it offers formulators the ability to adjust slip and anti-block properties while providing enhanced scratch resistance (Figure 1). Additionally, this entirely new recoatable surface additive provides excellent recoatability and repaintability across various coating and paint systems. This property is visualized in Figure 2 below, which shows the results of a cross-hatch adhesion test of a 2-component, solvent-based, polyester, clear wood lacquer applied by spray onto black PMMA panels. The coating containing TEGO® Glide 496 (right photograph) demonstrates extremely good recoatability properties when compared to a product containing a standard market surface additive (left photograph). Similar adhesion tests were also conducted on a different coating applied by spray in two layers, wet, 150 microns thick, onto beech wood. The cross-hatch test was performed 7 days after coating application and demonstrated excellent recoatability. This adhesion test was repeated when the usage level of the new recoatable surface additive was increased from 0.1% to 0.5% by weight and confirmed that even at the highest surface additive addition, there was no impact on recoatability.

Additional application tests have shown that TEGO® Glide 496 is suitable for both solvent and water-based formulations, exhibits excellent compatibility, and provides improved scratch resistance in various systems.
In addition to wood lacquers and plastic coatings, this new product is also suitable for use in automotive and transportation vehicle coatings as well as printing inks. In addition to all these properties, this additive is globally registered, is not listed as a substance of very high concern (SVHC), and complies with various regulations regarding food contact.
