Royalcast: Lanxess's High-Hardness Grade Special Polyurethane Raw Material System

Bowling balls, squeeze rolls used in the textile sector and coated with high-hardness polyurethane, high-hardness cast-type engineering plastics, or the solid and rigid blocks required by increasingly common 3D printers for processing and shaping. And a raw material group with high wear resistance, high impact resistance and process advantages that can be used to produce all these products or meet their requirements. Royalcast® cast polyurethane systems produced by Lanxess are special types of cast plastics that enable the hardness, toughness and impact resistance of many two-component engineering plastics to be obtained within the same structure. Unlike thermoplastic engineering plastics, low investment (machinery and equipment) costs and ease of use are other characteristics that make Royalcast® polyurethane systems more attractive.

Since the end of 2017, we have been distributors of LANXESS, a company that produces polyurethane raw material systems. The raw materials bearing the ADIPRENE, VIBRATHANE and especially Royalcast brands used in bowling ball manufacturing are produced with 65 years of accumulated expertise.

Royalcast® polyurethane systems produced with the experience brought by such a long history are white in colour and can be easily tinted with pigments. The hardness of high-modulus materials ranges between 77 Shore D and 85 Shore D. The heat-deflection temperature value is around 107°C. Royalcast® polyurethane systems are widely used in bowling ball production, but in hardnesses between 77 Shore D and 85 Shore D they are also preferred in the production of heavy-load wheels, roller coaster wheels and in the textile sector for coating squeeze rolls. With 6 different products in the product group, products of varying hardness can be obtained, and when these products are used with special curing agents developed by Lanxess, pot life can be achieved in 1 minute if desired, 6 minutes if desired, or 60 minutes if longer periods are needed. The added advantage provided by the long pot life allows large, high-volume or complexly structured products to be easily cast. Royalcast® branded products that meet the performance and process expectations expected from cast polyurethane raw materials with the characteristics mentioned above are, on the other hand, alternatives to engineering plastics such as cast-type polyamide (nylon), polyacetal (POM) and acrylic (PMMA). These types of engineering plastics are used by many industries due to their rigid and hard structure and heat resistance properties. However, particularly in terms of impact resistance, they do not provide as high performance as Royalcast® products. Additionally, it is difficult to use these types of engineering plastics in production processes. Some of the difficulties can be overcome with special machinery and equipment support, but most of the products produced are limited to plates, strips or solid rods.

Royalcast® Products Provide Advantages in These Areas;

• Long and adjustable pot lives, • Easy casting without the need for expensive machinery or equipment, • The ability to produce many different forms of products beyond plates, strips and rods and the ability to use them in coating operations in addition to solid parts, providing important advantages to users, • The natural white colour of the produced products is an advantage in painting, and colouring can be easily done with paste-form pigments and very low pigment usage rates. Additionally, shrinkage rates are at much lower levels compared to other engineering plastics, which is another advantageous condition.
