Moisture Absorber Molecular Sieve in Polyurethane Systems

Purmol® is a synthetic zeolite known as a molecular sieve and is produced in powder and paste form. It provides an optimum solution for removing water particles from the environment. Purmol® is used in two-component polyurethane systems in the production of sealants, cast resins, coatings and adhesives. Polyurethane is formed from the reaction of a polyol with isocyanate. Since this is an addition reaction, no byproduct is formed.

The presence of water causes dimerization of isocyanate and releases carbon dioxide gas.

Carbon dioxide gas release occurs intentionally in polyurethane foam production but is an undesirable condition in many other polyurethane applications. This results from the formation of gas bubbles. If moisture remaining in fillers and pigments in the formulation appears as water particles, we recommend adding Purmol® to the polyol before adding isocyanate to the polyol component. Our recommended amount is between 2.5 and 5%. The viscosity of the formulation increases sharply; premature curing occurs or uncontrolled foaming develops. To ensure complete adsorption of water, the polyol should be mixed for at least two hours before addition to the isocyanate. Additionally, Purmol® removes water particles from the substrate surface and becomes coated. This provides a bubble-free, smooth, homogeneous polyurethane layer. If pipe systems are protected particularly against wear or corrosive chemicals, polyurethane coating is the ideal solution in such cases. The service life of the pipe system is very important. To provide long-term polymer quality and optimum performance, Purmol® should be added to the formulation.

High-Quality Pipe Coating

In high-voltage insulation products, the homogeneity of the insulating body is extremely important. Defects in cast compounds cause short circuits. The high-quality requirements of this application are reliably met through the use of Purmol®.

Cast Compounds for High-Voltage Electrical Insulation

Mold materials, such as the sole of a sports shoe, must be clean, flawless and soft. It is important that products are manufactured solidly under pressure. Both requirements are applicable in the use of polyurethanes in suitable formulations. Therefore, Purmol® provides excellent performance.

In Mold Materials

Resistant floor coatings are characterized by wear resistance, a flat and soft surface and a combination of high stability. Polyurethane coatings are frequently used in such areas. The polymer is usually applied as a liquid layer and then forms a flat and resistant floor coating. Purmol® prevents irregularities caused by water particles in the coating and gas bubbles resulting from water presence.

Floor Coating

Glass insulation is the primary customer of molecular sieve. Molecular sieve beads are filled into the cavities of the aluminum section and shaped between glass sheets to serve as an intermediate layer for insulation. Recently, polymer foam has been used as an intermediate layer in thermal conductivity in glass insulation systems. Purmol® is used because glass insulation is exposed to moisture in the air during production. At the same time, Purmol® also adsorbs moisture that enters between the sheets during the production of the insulation system.
