One of the important themes for our customers, end consumers and Innospec is raising awareness regarding the high volumes of plastic packaging used in cosmetic products.
Plastics contain high quantities of petrochemicals and generally end up in oceans, causing problems for wildlife and our own health. Plastic is generally preferred in classical liquid formulations because of its strength and impermeability properties.
But what if the formulation is not a classical liquid formulation? For concentrate and solid forms, requirements are very different, so plastic would no longer be a necessity. Additionally, concentrate and solid forms contain less water or no water at all. This makes products lighter and smaller for transportation, requiring fewer vehicles on the road, thereby reducing air pollution and fuel consumption.
Innospec's Paper Pocket Tissue Wipe is a small, feather-light, circular piece of paper prepared using soft and sulfate-free surfactants derived from natural sources. When gently rubbed with lukewarm water, the paper completely dissolves and instantly creates a beautiful lather.
The cleanser can be used as a convenient hand wash or gentle facial cleanser. Both the formulation's performance and sustainability credentials are high. The paper format is so small and light that a small envelope or container can replace a large and heavy liquid formulation bottle.
Endless shapes and dispensers are also possible, for example reusable or recyclable dispensers, circles, strips and even flower confetti. The substrate used for the Paper Pocket Tissue Wipe is Sulky Paper Solvy water-soluble paper composed of 65% cellulose and 35% carboxymethyl cellulose.
The paper can be coated using a spray system or a "waterfall" drip method. The water-soluble paper can be easily unwound onto a roll for coating and drying before cutting and packaging.
Using paper as a substrate means a world of possibilities for easy printing on it; for example, a company logo or official formulation can be printed on it; special prints or collaborations can be easily included. Most powerfully, a QR code can be printed on the formulation so customers can see it before use. When the paper connects to the digital world, the possibilities increase further.
The QR code can direct to an e-commerce site or advertise recommended additional products; it can link to YouTube for video reviews or influencer vlogs. Additionally, the QR code can provide usage instructions or INCI lists.
Beyond the desire for less packaging and reduced water use, there is high demand for components with high naturality compliant with ISO 16128. This formulation combines three high-performance sulfate-free surfactants with high levels of naturality.
The source of raw materials we use to create Innospec's cosmetic ingredients is very important to us; we have taken steps to ensure that the palm oil used comes from an ethical source. Innospec has been a member of RSPO since 2013 and is also a member of the Sustainable Derivatives Collaboration Initiative. All surfactants in the formulations are derived from RSPO or palm-free sources.
Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate (Pureact GLT, 30% solids, aqueous solution) is a mild, sulfate-free, anionic surfactant that provides high foam volume and is 100% natural according to ISO 16128. Coco-glucoside (Pureact Gluco C, 50% active, aqueous solution) is an extremely mild, sulfate-free, nonionic surfactant and is 100% natural according to ISO 16128.
Sodium Cocoyl Glycinate (Pureact SCG, 30% active, aqueous solution) is a mild, sulfate-free, anionic surfactant; it provides a soft skin feel with dense, rich creamy lather. Pureact SCG is 86% natural according to ISO 16128. This combination of surfactants works synergistically to provide great foaming properties while delivering a gentle formulation with a high degree of naturality.
Additionally, this formulation has a very short and simple INCI list, which is something consumers are increasingly seeking. When formulating the liquid portion of the Paper Pocket Tissue Wipe, surfactants are combined and adjusted to neutral pH.
Depending on batch size, the printed paper substrate is briefly immersed in the solution or the solution is applied to the surface by spraying or dripping. The water is then allowed to evaporate from the paper before cutting and packaging.
Due to the production method, there is no need for viscosity control or consideration of formulation clarity. It is also possible for the formulation to contain no preservatives provided the solution is not stored for long periods.
