Phosphorus pentasulfide is an inorganic compound used in the production of lubricants, pesticides and flotation agents. As an extremely flammable substance, an inert atmosphere must be maintained during its production. A closed extractive measurement system and paramagnetic analyzer can be used to monitor O2 levels in production line equipment. Tunable diode laser (TDL) gas measurement analyzers use a laser beam tuned to a specific frequency to rapidly detect the amount of target element in a gas stream. Mettler Toledo's growing GPro 500 analyzer series enables TDL to be offered with a wide range of process adaptations. This gives the series great flexibility in terms of application compatibility and installation options. The GPro 500 requires no maintenance except annual verification and periodic cleaning of the analyzer optics; therefore, these analyzers can be relied upon to provide continuous and reliable measurements throughout production processes. The GPro 500 can be installed in situ when process conditions permit, or connected to an extraction system when there is a high particulate load or humid content in the gas stream, as is the case at Italmatch.Six Months Without Maintenance
The GPro 500 demonstration at Italmatch's Spoleto facility convinced the operations team of the analyzer's ease of use, fast response and low maintenance requirements. Additionally, the team appreciated the two alarm thresholds on the connected M400 transmitter, which signal when a low or high O2 level violation occurs in the production equipment. This was something not possible with the paramagnetic analyzer. A GPro 500 with extractive cell adaptation was installed in a new extraction system. Since the GPro 500 was commissioned at the Spoleto facility, the plant has been highly impressed with the measurement accuracy, fast measurement and trouble-free operation. Facility Manager: "I am very satisfied with the analyzer's performance. The installation was surprisingly easy, and since we installed it six months ago we have not experienced any downtime.
