What is Phosphorescent Paint?
Phosphorescent paint is luminous paint. In other words; paints that emit visible light through fluorescence, phosphorescence or radioluminescence. There are three types.1. Fluorescent Paint
Fluorescent paints, when exposed to long-wave ultraviolet frequencies, offer a wide range of pigments and brightness. These UV frequencies are found in sunlight and some artificial lighting. In fluorescence, the visible light component—also known as white light—tends to be reflected and perceived as color. Longer wavelengths are produced as energy. Thus, additional visible light frequencies are generated and emitted alongside the reflected white light. The human eye perceives these changes as the unusual brilliance of fluorescence. Figure 1. Phosphorescent paint, known as "glow-in-the-dark paint," is made from phosphors such as zinc sulfide activated with silver or strontium aluminate with additives, and typically glows in green to greenish-blue color. The light-production mechanism is similar to fluorescent paint, but in phosphorescent paints the emission of visible light continues for up to 12 hours after exposure to light. This paint type is used to mark emergency exits on aircraft and for decorative stars applied to walls. It is an alternative to radioluminescent paint. 3. Radioluminescent Paint Radioluminescent paint was invented in 1908 by Sabin Arnold von Sochocky and was produced with Radium-226. Radium is a substance that emits gamma rays, which are hazardous to human health. In the 1920s and 1930s, the harmful effects of this paint became more apparent. The "Radium Girls" case is known as an incident where a group of women working as clock makers had their health affected by exposure to radium. Additionally, in 1928, Dr. von Sochocky died of aplastic anemia as a result of radiation exposure. Radium was subsequently banned by international law for this use. However, due to the 1,600-year half-life of the Ra-226 isotope, watches obtained from antique shops or other sources can still be radioactive and can be identified with a Geiger counter. Figure 2. Fluorescent body paint. Under blacklight, fluorescent paints are used in theater and various art activities. Radioluminescent paint is a self-illuminating paint. It consists of a small amount of radioactive isotope (radionuclide) mixed with radioluminescent phosphor chemicals. The radioisotope continuously decays and emits radiation particles that strike phosphor molecules. Thus, the phosphor molecules are excited to emit visible light. Radioluminescent paints glow without exposure to light. Until the radioactive isotope decays or the phosphor breaks down.What is the Difference Between Fluorescent and Phosphorescent Paint?
Fluorescent substances glow as long as there is a light source to excite the material, but the emission occurs in a timeframe measured in nanoseconds. They darken immediately when the light source is removed. Phosphorescent materials, on the other hand, absorb photons from a light source and re-emit these photons as light. However, they do this very slowly. They can emit light for several hours. Main applications include: • Painting of safety and warning signs, • Photoluminescent plates, • Photoluminescent tapes, • Plastic molding, • Ceramic tiles, • Screen printing, • Military vehicles, • Watches. Phosphorescent paints, which can release the light they absorb within 1-24 hours depending on the structure of the product they are applied to, release the light they collect when power is cut or when it gets dark. For countries where access to electricity remains limited today, phosphorescent paints can be offered as an alternative solution in daily life. According to data from the UAE World Energy Outlook Report 2017; by 2030, the estimated population without access to electricity is 675 million people.
