AMP® 2-Amino-2-Methyl-1-Propanol Solution: AMP® Multifunctional Amino for Low-Cost Solvent-Based Alkyd Paints

AMP's (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol) unique structure and character profile enable paint formulators to convert solvent-based alkyd paints into emulsions with water additions of up to 15% without process or equipment changes and without additional raw materials. By using AMP, you can reduce paint costs and volatile organic compounds (VOC). Following ANGUS product instructions allows you to add water to solvent-based paint formulations, enabling cost reduction. AMP is compatible with most conventional long and medium-oil alkyd resins and other paint components. Key Performance Advantages • Provides formulation cost savings. • Reduces VOC values. • Improves color development and adhesion. • Requires no process or equipment changes.

Resin Types For this application, most conventional low-viscosity, long and medium-oil, and some short-oil resins will be suitable. Care must be taken to evaluate compatibility of each resin with AMP and water.

If in doubt, please consult your resin supplier or local ANGUS representative. Excellent results have been achieved with resins having the following properties: Oil Type: Soya (Minimum yellowing) Linoleic Oil Content: 65% Acid number: 6-20 mg KOH NVM: 70-75% Material Compatibility AMP is compatible with most paint raw materials. It should not cause yellowing or interfere with oxidative drying. Materials should always be checked for possible hydrolysis concerns.

Paint Stability

Solvent-based systems should be stable for at least 24 months. Paint formulators should conduct stability tests with their own materials and formulations. Paint containing AMP Multifunctional Amine and 12.5% water has been proven stable to temperatures as low as -20°C/-4°F.   Stability After 12 Months:   Stability After 50 Days at 50°C/122°F: Dry Film Properties Different glosses can be achieved by making some volumetric adjustments to the formulation. The coexistence of water with AMP has minimal effect on gloss. The AMP formulation on the right in the photograph below contains 15% water and provides 12% raw material cost savings over the control on the left. Opacity It is easy to optimize paint formulations to achieve the same opacity or hiding power. Improvements in Color Development AMP's unique structure typically improves color development. AMP Multifunctional Amine is compatible with a wide range of tinting systems. Additional potential savings are possible due to more effective use of colorants.

Wood Adhesion

AMP's unique structure, excellent drying properties, and beneficial adhesion performance allow water to be added to the formulation while providing excellent adhesion performance.

Process

• Perform grinding with a high-speed disperser. • Add ground material to the let-down and mix thoroughly. • Add AMP Multifunctional Amine and mix for a few minutes. • Controllably add water, preferably into the paint vortex. • Do not mix at high speed. Mixing at 100 rpm on low to medium setting is sufficient. Prevent air from entering the paint. • Mix for 20-30 minutes after all water has been added. • No off-line processing is required. • Process and material considerations: • Use long and medium-oil resins. For example, check resin stability against hydrolysis which can lead to yellowing. • AMP must be added before water addition. • Add driers in the recommended order. Add calcium drier to grinding. • Fillers: Calcium carbonate, clay, talc, barium sulfate can all be used. For matte coats use talc or a treated silica. Untreated silica will destabilize the emulsion. • If anti-foam is required, avoid silicone-containing anti-foams as they will destroy the water emulsion. • In-can preservative (biocide) is not required. • Final viscosity can be adjusted with water (increases viscosity) or white alcohol (decreases viscosity). • Alkyd paint containing AMP and water can be stored in unlined cans typically used for solvent-based paints; however, it is important to test can quality before use. In laboratory tests, no corrosion in cans was observed after 50 days at 50°C/122°F.
