Foam Formation

Foam refers to the formation of gas bubbles compressed within a liquid or solid medium. Foam formation depends on various factors such as surface tension, surface area and pressure of the medium in which the foam forms. In industrial applications, foam control is critical for uninterrupted production, efficiency, cost and product performance. Unwanted foam formation occurring during the production process disrupts the manufacturing process while negatively affecting the quality of the final product. Causes of foam formation include cellulose derivatives, mixing speed, resins, and post-production filling and application methods.

Foam breakers are chemical additives used to prevent foam formation in environments where foam is undesired and in industrial processes, or to eliminate foam in environments where foam formation has already occurred.

Foam breakers reduce the surface tension of a suspension or emulsion and prevent foam formation.

Chemipol
