New Ammonia-Free Styrene Acrylic Polymer Emulsion for Decorative Paints
ORGAL® PST 100 E
Decorative construction paints feature different binder technologies. These differences are shaped by performance properties, local market needs, and environmental and health considerations. Styrene acrylic binder polymers, which lead in this category, remain the first choice in many markets due to their high pigment binding strength and the excellent abrasion resistance provided by their hydrophobic character. Binders produced with this technology generally contain ammonia and cause a sharp odor in the product. In response to customer requests from Organik Kimya, a new-generation ammonia-free and environmentally sensitive polymer, Orgal PST 100 E, has been developed. Orgal PST 100 E is a styrene acrylic polymer containing 50% solids developed for both interior and exterior facade paint applications. The general properties of the polymer are shown in Figure 1. Orgal PST 100 E has been developed for use in the following paint formulations. • Matte and semi-gloss interior and exterior facade paints, • Textured paints, • Acrylic interior/exterior facade coatings, • Primer sealers, • Putties. To test the performance of Orgal PST 100 E, competing products used in the market containing ammonia (A+) and ammonia-free (A-) were selected and their basic properties were analyzed and compared (Figure 2). Orgal PST 100 E polymer provides excellent interaction with various polyurethane rheology modifiers. Figure 2 shows the proportions of polyurethane thickener used to equalize the final viscosity of paint containing 30% PVC prepared with Orgal PST 100 E and other styrene acrylic polymers to 7,000-8,000 cps. This demonstrates how much better performance Orgal PST 100 E exhibits compared to other styrene acrylic polymers and the cost advantage it provides. This new-generation polymer, with its innovative technology, provides excellent color strength performance with various colorant systems. Figure 3 visually shows color strength comparison with different colors. Paint formulated with Orgal PST 100 E polymer provides better color strength. Abrasion resistance performance in paints formulated with Orgal PST 100 E is significantly better compared to paints made with other styrene acrylic polymers. According to testing performed to ISO 11998 standard, micron loss on the paint surface determines performance. A reduction in micron loss on the paint surface indicates better performance. The comparison results are shown in Figure 5. In summary, the key features of Orgal PST 100 E are as follows. • A styrene acrylic polymer free of APEO and ammonia, • Provides excellent interaction with various PU rheology modifiers, • Provides excellent color strength with various colorant systems, • Has excellent pigment binding and abrasion resistance, • Provides very good adhesion to mineral surfaces, • Has excellent water resistance, • Has low viscosity that provides ease of use in production facilities. The product of long-term innovation work utilizing new technologies, Orgal PST 100 E is an excellent choice for high-quality paints as an ammonia-free styrene acrylic polymer with reduced harmful environmental effects.
