Reliable Rheology Solutions for Paints

Paint Rheology

Rheology is the branch of science that explains the flow properties and deformation of materials under different forces. Every material is affected by external forces. For paints, these forces can range from gravitational forces affecting properties such as sedimentation, sagging and spreading, to high shear forces acting on the paint during brush, roller or spray application. Viscosity, one of the important parameters of rheology science, is a measure of a material's resistance to flow. Bermocoll® Prime – High Performance Products High application viscosity is necessary to ensure good film formation and high opacity properties, and Bermocoll Prime is a high-performance product specially recommended for this application. Bermocoll Prime contributes far more to medium and high shear viscosities than standard type cellulose ethers. Developed as a new generation product in cellulose ethers, Bermocoll Prime can be used in all types of latex paints varying between low and high pigment volume concentration. This new product is suitable for all types of interior and exterior facade paints and the performance difference compared to other products is much more pronounced in flat and semi-gloss finishes.

Superior Color Stability and Excellent Color Development

The Bermocoll Prime product group enables excellent color stability to be achieved for a wide variety of colorants and latex binders. Bermocoll Prime is designed to improve color acceptance and color development and provides users with reliable color performance. Color development should perform independently of the paint's application force and shear rate, providing perfect opacity at every application point. (Figure 1) Color acceptance relates to the compatibility, distribution and stability of the colorant in the base paint. Figure 1. Examples of successful and unsuccessful color acceptance. Color acceptance is measured by the color difference between the base color and the paint applied as a second coat over it (dE (00)) Bermocoll Prime has been tested in systems known to be sensitive in terms of color acceptance and very low dE (00) values and very good color acceptance were obtained. Difficult color shades for color acceptance were selected, tested with a series of different dispersants and the results are shared in Figure 2.   Figure 2. Rheology Profile of Bermocoll Prime Products

Liquids whose viscosity decreases with applied shear rate are defined as pseudoplastic (Shear Thinning). Compared to Standard Bermocoll® products, Bermocoll Prime exhibits less pseudoplastic properties. While Bermocoll Prime has similar viscosity in paint, it has lower Brookfield viscosity in aqueous solution (see Figure 3). Slightly higher application viscosity positively affects the application performance of Bermocoll Prime products and contributes to the development of properties such as opacity. Figure 3. Effective Viscosity Increase and Stability at Low Addition Rates

As a result, paints formulated with Bermocoll Prime show very stable and constant viscosity even when stored at high temperatures and demonstrate highly effective performance in terms of compatibility with different types of binders.
