Barentz Introduces 100% Plant-Based Brazilian-Touch Silicone Alternative for Healthy, Shiny Hair
Brazilian manufacturer Chemyunion has developed 100% Plant-Based and Biodegradable Proshine for hair care products based on the core principles of Green Chemistry. Proshine delivers premium shine to hair while repairing hair cuticles, enhances hair color, and helps hair appear healthier.
In the cosmetics market, the first criterion consumers consider when evaluating the success of hair care products they use is the "shine" effect. This is because shine is one of the most fundamental indicators of healthy hair. Components commonly used to increase shine in hair care products are plant oils, plant extracts, and silicones.
Although plant oils and plant extracts come from renewable sources, they have weak interactions with hair cuticles and are easily removed from hair with water and shampoo. For this reason, they provide only superficial and short-lived shine. Silicones are widely used for shine. However, they have low biodegradability, weigh down hair, and make styling difficult.
100% Plant-Based and Biodegradable Proshine was developed taking three key properties into account: refractive index, reflection index, and intermolecular interactions.

The Castor Oil Propanediol Esters in Proshine's composition have a high refractive index (1.4790). They interact with proteins in hair strands, increasing light reflection in hair and imparting intense shine. Due to the polar groups in its molecular structure, it acts on hair cuticles. As seen in Image 1 and Image 2, ProShine interacts with the main structures of keratin (tyrosine, arginine, lysine, and aspartic acid) through hydrogen bonds and dipole-dipole bonds. In this way, by acting on hair cuticles, it ensures that cuticles become homogeneous.

Proshine can be used in all rinse-off (shampoo, conditioner, etc.) and leave-on (serum, mask, etc.) hair care formulations, and its effectiveness has been proven in clinical studies.
In clinical studies conducted with a conditioner containing 1% Proshine, shine increased by 428% in processed hair and 184% in natural hair compared to placebo. In the same tests, it was also compared with silicone derivatives, and more successful results were obtained with Proshine.
In applied tests with Proshine as a finished product, shine increased by:
- 127% in processed hair,
- 19% in natural hair,
- 42% in dyed hair.
