Arata Isozaki: Far Eastern Influences in Architecture

Arata Isozaki

Arata Isozaki was born in Oita on Kyushu Island and grew up during the post-war period in Japan. In 1954, he completed his studies in Architecture and Engineering at Tokyo University. This was followed by a doctoral program in architecture at the same university. Before establishing his own firm in 1963, Isozaki also worked under Kenzo Tange. According to Reyner Banham, Isozaki's early projects blended influences from European experience between "New Brutalism" and "Metabolist Architecture" (Oita Medical Hall, 1959-1960). His style continued to develop with buildings such as Fujimi Country Club (1973-74) and Kitakyushu Central Library (1973-74). He later developed a more contemporary style with buildings such as the Mito Art Tower in Galicia, Spain (1986-90) and Domus-Casa del Hombre (1991-1995). The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) completed in Los Angeles in 1986 was his first international project and his best-known work in the United States. Despite designing buildings both within and outside Japan, Isozaki has been defined as an architect who refuses to be confined to a single architectural style, emphasizing that "each of his designs is a particular solution arising from the project's context." Isozaki won the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2019.

Art Tower Mito

Art Tower Mito is a comprehensive cultural facility symbolized by a 100-meter-high titanium tower that opened in 1990 to commemorate Mito's 100th anniversary as an official city. The titanium tower is composed of 28 adjacent tetrahedrons (triangular pyramids) stacked on top of each other, each positioned at a different angle. The material selected for the tower's façade (titanium) captures the architect's vision of "selecting high-quality materials to build durable architecture." Titanium is known as a maintenance-free material due to its high resistance to corrosion and weather conditions. It is 60% lighter than steel and superior to other metals in strength and workability. Despite these superior properties, titanium use in architecture is limited due to high material costs. This project pioneered large-scale titanium use in Japan.

Titanium Equilateral Triangles

The titanium tetrahedrons making up this tower are constructed from 57 equilateral triangles with 9.6m sides. Each triangle consists of 8 pieces of sheet-finished titanium 1.5mm thick, 1050mm in length and width, and varying from trapezoids to triangles. The corners where the panels meet the structural beams are joined with 1.5mm stainless steel cutting within a φ95mm semicircle. The load-bearing frames consist of 1.5mm stainless steel bent and mounted as a unit. Integrity, wind resistance and water impermeability are ensured by carefully designed and calculated panels and frames. This is evident in details such as 230mm risers at the panel edge.

Akiyoshidai International Art Village (AIAV)

The "Akiyoshidai International Art Village (AIAV)" was built as a center where impressive and creative activities of both international and domestic artists converge. Located in Shuho Town, it sits adjacent to Akiyoshidai National Park, which features beautiful limestone scenery. This art village is fully equipped for various artistic activities including music, art, dance and drama. By bringing together artists from around the world and developing their creative activities, cultural knowledge in this region is disseminated internationally. This art facility, which succeeds in removing itself from the noise of daily life, was designed by Architect Arata Isozaki. Akiyoshidai International Art Village (AIAV) was established in 1998 to provide a platform for resident artists as well as various art forms and cultures. Located away from the noise of daily urban life and consisting of many different facilities, AIAV is surrounded by natural resources. The renowned architect Isozaki describes these characteristics of AIAV as "island clusters." The term "village" indicates that AIAV is not a single large building but a collective of small neighboring buildings reminiscent of a traditional Japanese village. In contrast to the ever-changing natural environment of forms, the square-shaped architecture was meticulously constructed and this particular side-by-side arrangement makes the entire landscape of AIAV picturesque.

The Palau Sant Jordi

Palau Sant Jordi is a closed multipurpose venue built for the Olympic Games in 1992. It is the most frequently used Olympic Barcelona facility as it hosts all types of sporting events, musical and theater performances and social gatherings. A phenomenon that can be considered one of the most fundamental characteristics of Arata Isozaki's architecture is also evident here. The fusion of East and West elements with intensive technical and technological resources brings a degree of modernity to this complex. The Palau, located near a conservation area behind Montjuïc Mountain with skirt-like sunken cone-shaped sheet forms that reference the Mediterranean, is an undisputed symbol of the Catalan capital. To cover its impressive span, the central area of the complex is seen to be selected from one of the lightest structural systems known as spatial grid-based steel connections.

Domus – Interactive Museum of Man

This project, designed by Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, is structured around a large exhibition area of 1200 m² along with an assembly hall, temporary exhibition hall and other units. The Domus – Interactive Museum of Man building is a pioneering interactive museum dedicated globally and monographically to humankind. It features various exhibitions explaining different aspects of the human experience such as the senses, heart, motor system, brain, skills and language. The complex contains approximately 200 modules, most of which are interactive and require the activation of a mechanism to be understood.
