Give Your Summer-Damaged Skin Extra Care in Autumn

Skin is exposed to and damaged by the harmful effects of sun and heat during summer months. Dermatology Specialist Dr. Figen Akın from Anadolu Health Center notes that skin increases pigment synthesis to protect itself from the harmful effects of sunlight during summer months and causes skin spots, stating: "For this reason, skin spot treatment should be done in autumn, not summer. Additionally, skin should be protected from autumn and cold winter effects, and care should be taken." Dermatology Specialist Dr. Figen Akın from Anadolu Health Center, emphasizing that certain skin problems are seen more frequently at the end of summer, states: "During summer, the increased melanin pigment acts as a shield to protect skin from the harmful effects of the sun, but in this case skin spots darken and become more visible. Treatment of these spots, which cosmetically bother the patient, should if possible not be done during summer months. If it is to be done, great care must be taken."

Moisturizing Skin is Very Important

Pointing out that it is more correct to prefer moisturizers without covering properties and with higher water content during summer months, Dr. Figen Akın states: "In this way, we restore the water from the skin that evaporates through heat. For sun protection, we should prefer products that protect against both UVA and UVB." Noting that the upper layer that serves as a mantle on the skin dries during cold winter months, and this manifests itself on the skin with flaking, Dr. Figen Akın says: "During cold weather, it is very important to increase skin moisture. For this, slightly heavier products should be preferred."

Correct Skin Masks Should Be Used

Dermatology Specialist Dr. Figen Akın points out that the possibility of masks applied according to recipes causing allergies on sensitive skin is quite high, stating: "Before applying such masks, they should first be tested on inconspicuous areas such as behind the ear. Similarly, it should not be forgotten that there are similar risks in tattoos applied to the body and eyebrow contour shaping. The habit of consulting pharmacies instead of a doctor for skin diseases and purchasing medication can sometimes make the disease picture worse."

Skin Should Be Cleansed of Makeup at the End of the Day

Emphasizing that skin cleansing and removing skin from makeup products and environmental pollution is very important for healthy skin, Dr. Figen Akın states: "The products used may vary depending on skin type. Oily skin can use gel, combination and dry skin can use washable cream-form cleansing products. Sensitive skin prone to redness should cleanse skin with soft, non-irritating foam-type products." Dermatology Specialist Dr. Figen Akın lists nutrients that positively affect skin health as follows:

Honey

Honey is a very important nutrient for skin and body health. It is very rich in B, C vitamins and zinc.

Yogurt

It is very rich in calcium, zinc, B and C vitamins. It moisturizes skin very well, and with its antioxidant properties eliminates skin itching and redness.

Cucumber

Cucumber, counted among vegetables with very high water content, also has very beneficial effects on skin. It contains B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, folic acid, C vitamin, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and zinc.
