Experts point out an important relationship between overweight and obesity, which is increasingly prevalent in society, and the microbiota, emphasizing that the bacterial diversity in the microbiota of obese and normal-weight individuals differs. Prof. Dr. Murat Baş, nutrition and dietetics specialist, noted that when intestinal health deteriorates, GLP-1 hormone secreted from the intestines decreases, a condition that leads to increased appetite. Prof. Dr. Murat Baş states: "Appropriate probiotic use and healthy eating habits support intestinal health by raising GLP-1 hormone levels, which results in reduced food intake and appetite." Since 1980, obesity and overweight have increased by 27.5% in adults and 47.1% in children. While the proportion of obese or overweight adult population worldwide stands at 37%, no country has been identified where the obesity rate has declined in the past 33 years. In response to this situation, health organizations, research institutions and the scientific community have begun taking measures for healthy weight control. At a meeting held in Istanbul bringing together dietitians and pharmacists, the relationship between weight control and healthy microbiota was discussed, along with the effects of probiotics, which help support digestion and immune system function, on weight control. Prof. Dr. Murat Baş, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University and Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department, spoke about the effects of "Weight Memory in the Microbiota" on healthy living, while Henna Maria Uusitupa, Senior Scientist at DuPont Nutrition and Health Science, shared data from clinical studies conducted in the field of "Probiotics and Weight Control."

Intestinal Microbiota and Body Weight Management

Prof. Dr. Murat Baş, nutrition and dietetics specialist, in his presentation titled "Intestinal Microbiota and Body Weight Management," stated that the intestinal/intestinal barrier covers approximately 400 square meters of surface area, uses about 40% of the body's energy expenditure, and is renewed approximately every 5 days.

Probiotics Regulate Digestive Health

Prof. Dr. Murat Baş, noting that the connection between intestinal microbiota and body weight has been examined comprehensively in many studies, emphasized that probiotics regulate digestive health, stating that compared to normal-weight individuals, overweight and obese individuals have compromised microbiota, and drew attention to the fact that probiotics reduce fat storage and support fat elimination through feces. Prof. Dr. Murat Baş stated that in studies conducted, probiotic supplementation increased weight loss in individuals experiencing constant hunger and food cravings.

Healthy Eating Habits Support Intestinal Health

Prof. Dr. Murat Baş, noting that GLP-1 hormone produced in the intestines is an effective hormone in regulating blood sugar levels, drew attention to the fact that when intestinal health deteriorates, the level of GLP-1 hormone secreted from the intestines decreases, and appetite increases accordingly. Prof. Dr. Murat Baş provided the following information: "Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a hormone produced in the intestines when nutrients enter the intestines. GLP-1 hormone plays an important role in maintaining stable blood sugar levels and makes you feel good. The reduction in appetite that occurs immediately after body weight loss is partly due to an increase in GLP-1. When intestinal health deteriorates, the level of GLP-1 hormone secreted from the intestines decreases, and appetite increases accordingly. For this reason, individuals with compromised intestinal health tend to gain body weight. Appropriate probiotic use and healthy eating habits support intestinal health and raise GLP-1 hormone levels, which results in reduced food intake and appetite."
