Philip Johnson and 3 Iconic Works

Philip Johnson was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1906. Johnson, one of the most important names in architecture, worked in various professional fields as a client, critic, writer, historian, and museum director before designing his first building at age 36. In 1949, serving as the first director of the Architecture Department at the Museum of Modern Art, Johnson subsequently designed a residence for his master's thesis and launched a successful architectural career. The renowned architect passed away in 2005 at the age of 99.

Puerta de Europa

These two office towers flank Paseo de la Castellana, Madrid's most important boulevard. The location of the metro intersection made it impossible to position two towers close to the street. However, this bold design succeeded in responding to the need to modify the footprints of the towers from behind and simultaneously bring the towers together as a single compositional whole. Leaning toward each other and toward the adjacent plazas, the towers are visible from the beginning and end of Paseo and form a European gateway at the north end of Madrid's business district.

Lipstick Building

The Lipstick Building, located at 885 Third Avenue in Manhattan, New York, USA, is a 138-meter-high skyscraper. It was completed in 1986 and has 34 floors. The building was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee Architects. The building takes its name from its shape and color, which resemble a lipstick tube. The building blocks recede in three tiers as part of Manhattan's zoning regulations, and the building, within its spatial envelope, increases the presence of light falling on the street. The result is a form that appears to recede telescopically. Its unusual shape compared to surrounding buildings occupies less space than a typical skyscraper would with a rectangular footprint at its base. This provides more space for the many pedestrians traveling along Third Avenue.

PPG Building

PPG Place occupies an area three city blocks wide in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, adjacent to the historic Market Square. This gleaming glass complex stands as a 40-story office tower in Pittsburgh, one of America's most livable cities, reflecting the city's sky, hills, rivers, and other buildings. PPG Place offers first-class office space, dining facilities, and service accommodation units. In addition to the 194-meter main building in the center of this complex, there are five other buildings: a 14-story building and four six-story buildings. These buildings surround the main plaza, evoking the appearance of great European squares. Covered with red, gray, and black granite mosaic, the plaza serves as both a peaceful refuge and a reflection of a breathtaking urban commercial center. Known worldwide for its breathtaking design, these gleaming glass and steel structures were designed by John Burgee Architects and Philip Johnson, the world-renowned architect of New York. This complex touches Pittsburgh's architecture and was designed to recall the city's grand buildings such as the Cathedral of Learning and Allegheny County Courthouse. PPG Place's neo-Gothic forms create a perfect architectural bridge between the city's historic structures and new geometric high-rise towers.
