Cellist Zuill Bailey, who successfully balances solo performance, artistic direction and teaching, will perform one of his most acclaimed works at this concert, Hemingway Stories. Michael Daugherty's music, which strengthens his position in contemporary repertoire with each passing day, is undoubtedly well-suited to Bailey, who greatly enjoys exploring modernism's counterparts in the past century and today. The concert's other star is soprano Kate Royal, who will perform in the final movement of Gustav Mahler's Fourth Symphony, a gift to music that gains new meaning with each listening through its profound philosophical depth. Royal, whose repertoire spans from Mozart to Britten, is among the distinguished soloists of the world's major music centers, performing in Paris, London and New York among others, on both opera stages and in concert halls.
