Let's Protect Our Cities Through Art

Activist, ceramic artist and art historian Özgür Ceren Can drew attention to the transformative power of art in preserving cultural heritage and strengthening city identities, calling for "Let Us Own Our Cities Through Art." Artist Ceren Can emphasized that urban life should be enriched with historical and cultural heritage.

Expressing that she views art as a bridge that keeps cultural values alive, Ceren Can stated in her remarks, "Art is a tool that strengthens city identity and reinforces the sense of belonging to that city."

Drawing attention with her activities that bring Anafartalar Bazaar into cultural heritage, Can noted that historical structures, squares and streets in cities should be evaluated as art spaces to prevent the loss of cultural heritage. Can continued as follows: "Art is one of the most important elements that sustains the spirit of a city. Making art more visible in public spaces creates a strong bond between city residents and cultural heritage."

 Saying "We must carry our cultural values into the future through art," Can stated that public art projects create an integrated interaction with society and spread awareness of cultural heritage. Expressing that artworks integrated with historical textures and cultural spaces leave a lasting mark on society's memory, the artist said, "Every individual who encounters art in cities will possess their past more consciously."

Advocating that art should reach the public not only in exhibition halls but in neighborhoods, streets and squares, Can stated that public art projects will strengthen city aesthetics, reinforce social belonging and contribute to leaving a stronger cultural heritage to future generations.
