Analysis of Adsorbable Organic Bound Halogens Compliant with DIN 38409-59

Analysis of halogenated organic compounds in environmental samples has been mandatory in many countries for decades. For this purpose, the AOX (adsorbable organically bound halogens) total parameter is used to determine the amount of adsorbable organically bound chlorine, bromine and iodine in water samples. Current standards, DIN ISO 9562 and EPA Method 1650, describe the determination of AOX through adsorption followed by combustion and microcoulometric titration. However, the use of titration as a detection technique only permits the determination of AOX expressed as chlorine, but does not permit the determination of the separate fractions of AOCl, AOBr and AOI or AOF (adsorbable organically bound fluorine).
The new DIN 38409-59 standard enables the determination of AOF, AOCl, AOBr and AOI as separate fractions and CIC-AOX(Cl) total parameter using Combustion Ion Chromatography (CIC) technique. Thus, the gaps left by DIN ISO 9562 and EPA Method 1650 are closed and a standardised approach is provided for reliable and reproducible results, including sample preparation.
