Evonik Industries AG is accelerating its growth strategy in the hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) segment through new investments. The company has initiated construction for capacity expansion at its existing facility in Germany, while launching engineering work for a new production plant planned in the Asia region.
The investments aim to strengthen Evonik's global production infrastructure for high-performance polybutadienes and to respond to rising customer demand with supply chains that are closer and more reliable.
Construction underway in Germany, target second quarter 2027
Evonik has moved into the construction phase of an investment that will significantly increase HTPB capacity at its existing production site in Germany. The capacity expansion is scheduled to be commissioned in the second quarter of 2027.
Engineering process underway for Asia investment
In parallel with the expansion in Germany, the company has also launched engineering work for a new HTPB facility to be built in Asia. The location of the plant was determined with consideration for synergies that can be created with Evonik's existing assets.
Dr. Jürgen Herwig, Head of the Polybutadiene Business, commented on the matter:
“The location of the new plant was selected based on the opportunity to create synergy with Evonik's existing assets,” he said.
“We will provide higher supply security”
Dr. Anna Maria Ickert, Head of Coating & Adhesive Resins at Evonik, emphasized that the fundamental motivation behind the investments is growing demand, stating:
“These investments demonstrate our commitment to meeting rising global demand. We will continue to support our customers with higher supply security and geographic proximity.”
Continuation of recent expansion
Over the past two years, Evonik has taken significant steps to strengthen its global production network in the HTPB field. In 2024, the company pursued capacity expansion at its Marl site in Germany, and in 2025 commissioned a new production facility for POLYVEST® ST-E 60 polybutadienes in Shanghai, China.
The new investments further reinforce Evonik's focus on innovation, its objective to expand its global footprint, and its approach to providing customers with uninterrupted supply of high-performance materials.
