PAÜ Launches Significant Project in the Textile Sector

Important Project in Textiles from PAÜ In a joint research article by Pamukkale University (PAÜ) faculty members Assoc. Prof. Derya Tatman and Assoc. Prof. Ali Serkan Soydan, the researchers evaluated the contribution of digital sampling in apparel manufacturing to production process efficiency. The faculty members, who concluded that digital sampling provided savings of 80 percent, presented part of their work at the Ministry of Industry and Technology's 'Digital Transformation and Productivity' conference. Assoc. Prof. Derya Tatman from the Design Department at PAÜ Denizli Technical Sciences Vocational School and Assoc. Prof. Ali Serkan Soydan from the Textile Engineering Department at PAÜ Faculty of Engineering conducted joint research with industry. In their study, the faculty members compared the traditional sample production method applied in ready-made clothing enterprises with the virtual sample production method using digital workflow in terms of efficiency and sustainability. They carried out their applications at a company using both traditional and digital sample production methods. Four different model samples were produced simultaneously using traditional and digital production processes. The data obtained from work studies were compared in terms of efficiency and sustainability. Accordingly, the researchers concluded that digital sampling provided cost savings of 80 percent compared to physical sampling. They also pointed out that significant amounts of pattern paper, by-products and fabric waste are generated in traditional sample production. This study, which also found that minimal amounts of fabric are sufficient for physical tests, established itself in the literature as an original work comparing both sample production processes in terms of efficiency and sustainability.

Providing explanations regarding their project, Assoc. Prof. Ali Serkan Soydan stated: "Today, textile enterprises will be able to compete in international markets by increasing efficiency at every stage of their production processes. However, in doing so, they must also consider sustainable production factors. In recent years, as we have begun to experience the effects of climate change more prominently, the importance of efficient use of scarce resources has once again become evident. It is well known that water is used intensively in the preparation and dyeing processes of textile products. Almost all international ready-made clothing brands share their environmental awareness and contributions to sustainability under the sustainability tab on their websites. Productivity can generally be defined as the measurement of the economic effectiveness of production means as a whole. Therefore, any improvements made in the production process will contribute positively to productivity. In the ready-made clothing sector, fabric costs account for nearly half of product costs. For this reason, the use of fabric and other raw materials directly affects productivity. In sample production, the priority objective should be to minimize resource utilization and achieve high efficiency rates in production. This project, which we prepared jointly with Textile Investment Holding, one of the leading ready-made clothing manufacturers in our country, is an important work in adapting technological developments to the textile sector. I extend my thanks to all those who contributed to this project," he said. Assoc. Prof. Derya Tatman, providing explanations regarding their project, said: "With technological developments, another option is digital sampling; it is created by bringing together virtual mannequins, 2D patterns, textile materials and by-products in a 3D fashion design program. After virtual sewing and fitting work, rendering and animation operations are performed. The patterns and materials used in digital sampling are the same as those used in the traditional sample production method. Additionally, since mannequin measurements in digital sampling are defined according to the product measurement table, the produced sample provides perfect matching with the traditional sample. Today, digital sample production is becoming more widespread. The resulting waste and calculated unit costs suggest serious differences between physical and digital sampling in terms of efficiency and sustainability. In this study, virtual samples prepared in digital format for four separate products were compared in terms of efficiency in duration and cost; the sample preparation processes were also compared in terms of waste generation. Having implemented this project on a multidisciplinary basis, I extend my thanks to all those who contributed to this project, believing that it will make important contributions to the development of our textile sector, particularly in our country, through lower production costs and instead greater R&D investments," she said.
