Cotton Seed Varieties Registered in EU Countries MAY Tohum completed registration of its MAY455 and MAY344 cotton seed varieties in EU countries through collaboration with TAGEM. MAY Tohum, one of Turkey's leading cotton seed breeders and producers, completed the variety registration processes in EU countries for the MAY455 and MAY344 varieties, which it included in its portfolio as a result of the "Variety Development and Adaptation Research in Cotton through Hybridization Breeding" project implemented between 2008 and 2013 with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, General Directorate of Agricultural Research and Policies (TAGEM). The registered varieties will reach cotton producers in EU countries where cotton is cultivated, notably Spain, in 2022. Hamdi Çiftçiler, Co-Chairman of MAY Tohum Board of Directors, providing detailed information on cotton varieties and export activities, said: "Our cotton R&D work, which we began in 2008, quickly started yielding very good results.

Our cotton varieties MAY455, MAY505 and MAY344, developed through collaboration with TAGEM, gained appreciation in the United States and EU countries for their field performance and fibre quality following their success in the Turkish market. As of February 2022, the registration of our MAY455 and MAY344 varieties in EU countries is complete and we will accelerate our marketing and sales activities in the relevant countries," he said. Çiftçiler stated: "As a result of our R&D activities, we are proud that varieties developed in Turkey have reached the level of conducting trade by obtaining industrial property rights in developed countries and contributing to increased confidence in Turkey's seed sector globally. As MAY Tohum, the varieties we develop attract attention every year for their field performance and fibre quality values in the relevant countries. We continue to develop the export potential of our country through value-added seeds and industrial property rights usage, namely licensing sales." Emphasizing that they are focusing particularly on breeding new cotton seed varieties with very high fibre quality values, Çiftçiler said: "As MAY Tohum, we have created the 'MyFiber' platform by determining variety characteristics that will provide solutions to the expectations of the textile sector in our cotton breeding work, addressing the demands of producers and ginners such as high fibre quality, productivity, and high ginning output. Under the scope of our MyFiber platform, we added one more new variety this year to our varieties MAY505, MAY455 and MAY771. We continue to strengthen our cotton portfolio to make it competitive in the global market. Under our MyFiber platform brand, we continue our efforts for Plant Breeders' Rights and Variety Registration of our new variety MAY558, which we bred in Turkey," he said.   Source
