Paper-Based Packaging with Ultra-High Barrier Properties
Mondi invests in FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate, an ultra-high barrier paper-based packaging solution.
Mondi, a global leader in packaging and paper, is investing EUR 16 million in new technology to produce a new packaging series called FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate. This ultra-high barrier paper-based solution for food applications addresses growing customer demand for sustainable packaging that contributes to the circular economy.
This new product expands Mondi's existing FunctionalBarrier Paper portfolio, which provides high barrier paper-based packaging for food products such as dried goods and milk powder, as well as applications in the home and personal care sector.
These products require packaging that provides protection against water vapor and oxygen while offering a long shelf life. To achieve this barrier protection level, current industry standards rely on non-recyclable solutions made from plastic or coated with aluminum.

Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate series is designed to be recyclable in European paper waste streams while providing the necessary product protection.
Initial trials of the FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate series delivered positive results for both customers and end consumers, demonstrating broad acceptance of the paper solution and its preference over non-recyclable aluminum and plastic-based alternatives.
The investment in our Solec facility in Poland enables Mondi to produce high barrier functional paper at scale using the latest technology and efficient processes.
Through the company's unique integrated value chain, Mondi can deliver the complete solution in-house, from production and coating through printing and conversion to the final packaging product. This provides customers with an efficient solution for their packaging needs.
Dirk Gabriel, Chief Operating Officer of Mondi Consumer Flexibles, comments: "As a global leader in sustainable packaging solutions, we have been focused on the aluminum barrier challenge for some time. By investing in research, development and new technologies, we knew we would find an effective alternative that would provide the necessary protection for our customers' food products.
FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate helps our existing and new food producer customers transition to a more sustainable packaging solution and thereby contribute to their sustainability targets.
This is a concrete example of our commitment to Mondi Action Plan 2030 (MAP2030), which aims to make all our packaging solutions reusable, recyclable and compostable."
Industrial-scale production of the FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate series is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2024.
