Turkey's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Rise

Turkey's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Increased Turkey's total greenhouse gas emissions rose 7.7% year-on-year in 2021 to 564.4 million tonnes CO2 equivalent. The Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) released greenhouse gas emission data for 2021. During this period, energy-related emissions accounted for the largest share of total emissions at 71.3%, followed by industrial processes and product use at 13.3%, agriculture at 12.8%, and waste sector at 2.6%. Per capita total greenhouse gas emissions stood at 4 tonnes CO2 equivalent in 1990, 6.3 tonnes in 2020, and 6.7 tonnes CO2 equivalent in 2021. As a result, total greenhouse gas emissions in 2021 increased 7.7% year-on-year to 564.4 million tonnes CO2 equivalent. Energy sector emissions in 2021 rose 9.8% year-on-year to 402.5 million tonnes CO2 equivalent. Industrial processes and product use emissions in 2021 increased 10.6% year-on-year to 75.1 million tonnes CO2 equivalent. Agriculture sector emissions during this period declined 1.5% to 72.1 million tonnes CO2 equivalent. Waste sector emissions fell 9.9% to 14.7 million tonnes CO2 equivalent.
