Tüpraş recovers 87 million tons of water
Over the past five years, Tüpraş recovered 87 million tonnes of water and reused it in production processes, equivalent to the annual water consumption of 1.1 million people.
Tüpraş carries out its activities in line with its 'Water Roadmap' developed in alignment with its 2050 Carbon Neutral strategy with the aim of sustainable use of natural resources and protection against the effects of climate change.
Tüpraş continues its work with a focus on conservation and most efficient use of natural resources, increasing recycling, reuse of wastewater and protection of biodiversity, while tracking its environmental performance through digital technologies and aiming for continuous improvement and development.
The company targets 600,000 tonnes of water savings in 2024 through innovative and digital projects aimed at water efficiency.
Tüpraş General Manager İbrahim Yelmenoğlu said the company aimed to achieve 600,000 tonnes of water savings this year through innovative and digital projects on water efficiency.
Yelmenoğlu stated that they continue to work in line with the 'Strategic Transformation Plan' they launched in 2022 under the slogan 'Our Energy for the Future', adding: 'With the contribution of investments we will make in new energy sources and energy efficiency projects, we have committed to reducing carbon emissions from our operations by 27 percent by 2030 compared to 2017, and to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. Sustainable refining and efficient resource use are also an important part of this target.' He noted that sustainable refining and resource efficiency are key components of this goal.
Water and ecosystem protection purposes, Yelmenoğlu noted that they act with consideration of climate change impacts in the use of current and future water resources, and continued his remarks as follows:
'As part of our Water Roadmap aligned with our 2050 Carbon Neutral strategy; we are focusing on water savings, water recovery, symbiosis applications and protection of biodiversity for the purpose of sustainable use of natural resources.
Our company holds the position of the first Turkish industrial organization to become a member of Water Europe, the leading stakeholder organization shaping European policies in water management. We have set a target of 600,000 tonnes of water savings in 2024. To reach this target; we are organizing workshops at our refineries, strengthening water recovery systems and implementing innovative and digital water projects that increase maximum-level reuse of water and achieve raw water savings.'
Noting that Tüpraş achieved significant success in the CDP Carbon Disclosure Project, Yelmenoğlu stated:
'With the applications we have launched for sustainable management of natural resources, we participated for the first time in 2023 and have been rated at 'B' Management Level in both the Climate Change and Water Security programs of the CDP Carbon Disclosure Project, in which over 21,000 companies report. Among companies operating in the oil sector and evaluated by CDP in the 'Water Security' program, we rank in the top positions. Our company, which has a rating that sets an example in its sector, continues its efforts to be included in the list of global leaders through environmental reporting it will continue in coming years.'
