Tosyalı, Turkey's leading green steel producer, has released its second sustainability report covering the 2022 fiscal year and prepared in accordance with GRI standards. Tosyalı shared its sustainability report for the 2022 fiscal year with the public. Prepared in accordance with GRI standards, the report comprehensively presents sustainability initiatives conducted under three different impact areas: "Carbon-Free Steel", "Responsible Ecosystem Management" and "The Future of Business".
Reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 21% compared to previous year
According to data in the report, Tosyalı reduced greenhouse gas emissions from its operations in Turkey by 21% compared to the previous year, preventing approximately 281,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions. In 2022, following intensity calculations that addressed Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, the company reduced greenhouse gas intensity from its Turkish operations by 26%. Through Tosyalı's work in many areas such as zero waste, circular production and recovery, the amount of non-hazardous waste recovered in Turkish operations rose to 99.9%.
"We have demonstrated our commitment to reducing emissions further"
Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of Tosyalı Holding, made comments regarding the report. Stating that the company has begun to see positive results from sustainability investments, Fuat Tosyalı said: "As Tosyalı, we believe that carbon-free, green steel production is possible and we continue to make value-creating investments for this. Sustainability is at the core of all investments we make in our existing and new facilities. We are creating facility infrastructure that emits less carbon, consumes less water and energy, uses renewable energy, and is productive and efficient. We calculate our emissions on a product basis and certify them with international certificates. With our green steel products, we are already prepared for the carbon border adjustment mechanism that will begin in 2026 under the EU Green Deal. After Scope 1 and Scope 2, in this report we have calculated Scope 3 emissions for the first time, demonstrating our commitment to further reducing our emissions across all business processes," he said. Fuat Tosyalı added: "Through our investments in circular economy, clean energy sources such as solar and hydrogen, alongside technology, innovation and digitalization, we will continue to inspire our entire industry and stakeholders toward sustainable living as one of the world's leading green steel producers."
Reduced water consumption by 11%
Tosyalı is also working to reduce water consumption. The company is implementing many projects such as closed-loop systems, various discharge methods and reusing process water cooled through cooling towers. Thanks to these projects, despite increased production volumes, Tosyalı managed to reduce water consumption by 11% compared to the previous year in 2022.
90% of suppliers are local producers
Tosyalı increased its supplier count by 46% compared to the previous year. Viewing contribution to the development of its operating region as its top priority, Tosyalı increased its local supplier count in 2022 by a rate exceeding 40% compared to the previous year. With this increase, 90% of Tosyalı's suppliers consist of local producers.
Prioritizes social projects
Tosyalı also prioritizes social projects that will add value to community life. In 2022, the company initiated many social investments and, through its collaboration with Contemporary İstanbul Foundation on converting scrap waste into artworks through advanced recycling with a sustainability focus, hosted young artists in the "Artist in Residence" program at Contemporary Istanbul.
Company's employee engagement score reached 74%
Tosyalı continued its investments in human resources, which it sees as its most valuable asset, in 2022. In 2022, the company increased total training hours organized for its employees by approximately 21% compared to the previous year, while increasing occupational health and safety training hours per employee by 58% compared to the previous year. The company also implemented many of the suggestions received from employees through its Human Resources Suggestion System in 2022. Thanks to all these efforts, the company's employee engagement score reached 74%, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
