Toppan Develops New Barrier-Coated Paper for Packaging
Toppan has introduced GL-X-P, which it says delivers high barrier performance and flexible strength to paper-based packaging across sectors including food and toilet articles. Shipment of GL-X-P samples to manufacturers across a broad range of industries worldwide, including food and bathroom products, will begin in September, with full-scale sales launch planned for spring 2022.
GL-X-P's excellent water vapor barrier performance enables prevention of content quality deterioration caused by moisture, while its flexible strength means it can be used for a wide variety of packaging shapes. These properties allow its use in packaging for a diverse range of powders and solid contents, including food products such as ready-to-drink coffee, powdered soups and chocolate, as well as cosmetics and toilet articles.
As an alternative to traditional packaging using paper, GL-X-P also offers environmental benefits. By potentially extending shelf life made possible through freshness preservation, it can contribute to reducing food waste. Since GL-X-P itself is heat-sealable, an all-paper structure is possible that reduces plastic consumption and facilitates a reduction in CO2 emissions of approximately 35% (Toppan calculation).
With the establishment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and increasing global momentum to protect the environment and conserve resources, interest in packaging that reduces environmental impact is growing. Efforts to reduce food loss and ensure sustainability are now critical, and product packages are expected not only to preserve freshness and maintain contents for longer periods, but also to reduce environmental impact through resource conservation and recyclability.
