Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project
An evaluation meeting was held for the "Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project," in which Bartın Üniversitesi (BARÜ) is among the pilot higher education institutions.
The "Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus Project Pilot Universities Meeting" was organized in Konya under the chairmanship of Council of Higher Education (YÖK) President Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar. The meeting, hosted by Selçuk Üniversitesi, was attended by Deputy Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Hasan Suver, YÖK Vice President Prof. Dr. Cevahir Uzkurt, YÖK Executive Board Member Prof. Dr. Naci Gündoğan, Bartın Üniversitesi (BARÜ) Rector Prof. Dr. Orhan Uzun, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Zahmakıran, and rectors of the universities selected as pilot institutions.
At the meeting, attended by representatives of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the current status of the 11 pilot universities in the fields of zero waste, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, as well as the contributions of the ministries to these areas, were discussed. The meeting also established a roadmap for the upcoming period in achieving the Sustainable and Climate-Friendly Campus targets.
Speaking at the meeting, Council of Higher Education President Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar noted that climate change is a reality threatening the existence of societies, human life, nature and all living things worldwide.
Pointing out that measures to be taken against climate change will be possible through data-based, realistic and collaborative approaches with the participation of all stakeholders, Özvar emphasized that the measures to be taken in the face of this threat to the entire world are highly important.
Recalling that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to which world leaders agreed at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit in September 2015, was adopted with the signatures of 193 countries, Özvar stated that this agenda brings efforts to combat climate change together with economic and social development issues on the same level, and was prepared as a continuation of the Millennium Development Goals implemented in 2000, advancing these goals further. Rector Uzun, in his assessments regarding the meeting, expressed that they are proceeding with determination in the direction of adding value to our shared future.
Rector Uzun stated, "As Bartın Üniversitesi, we aim to add value to our future in the fields of education, research and development, and social contribution. At this point, with the work we are conducting, we are raising awareness about our shared responsibilities on the one hand, while on the other hand, we are making significant contributions to the process with the understanding of 'Productive University.'
With our efforts, we are bringing our country closer to the goal of becoming one of the most important actors in the fight against global climate change. We have made significant progress as a university in environmental awareness and sustainability, and we want to pass this on to the future in a sustainable manner.
With these thoughts, I would like to express my gratitude to our Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Mr. Murat Kurum and our Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Mr. Fatih Dönmez for their incentives in implementing practices that will bring breath to the future. I also thank YÖK President Prof. Dr. Mr. Erol Özvar and our YÖK members for their support in reaching better outcomes."
