Sustainable Chemical Engineering Academic Receives Award

Sustainable Chemical Engineering Scholar Honored with Prestigious Award IChemE's prestigious Davis Medal presented to the world's first Professor of Sustainable Chemical Engineering. Professor Adisa Azapagic MBE was named recipient of the Institution of Chemical Engineers' (IChemE) most prestigious medal ahead of delivering the opening keynote at the European Congress of Chemical Engineering in Berlin. The IChemE Davis Medal honors George E. Davis, the founding father of the profession, and is awarded to an eminent individual who has rendered extraordinary service to chemical engineering. Presented triennially, the medal was last awarded in 2016. The medal was presented by IChemE Past President David Bogle: "I am honored to present the Davis Medal on behalf of IChemE to Adisa Azapagic in recognition of her extraordinary contribution to the profession and the exceptionally positive impact of her achievements. Sustainability and systems thinking lie at the heart of modern chemical engineering discipline, and her work exemplifies this instrumental approach." Adisa Azapagic was appointed the world's first Professor of Sustainable Chemical Engineering. Based at Manchester University, Adisa Azapagic is distinguished by her work on sustainable production and consumption, and is recognized for her leadership and contributions in carbon footprinting, life cycle assessment and sustainability. She was awarded an MBE in 2019. She has published more than 200 journal articles, three books, and delivered numerous plenary and keynote lectures worldwide. With two honorary doctorates and an h-index of 76, her work has significantly influenced the sector and informed national and international policy. Through extensive public engagement and media participation, she has served as a role model by informing consumers about what they can do for sustainability while demonstrating how chemical engineers contribute to sustainable development in practice, creating a positive public perception of the discipline. Professor Azapagic commented: "I am deeply honored that my work in sustainable chemical engineering has been recognized with this prestigious award, which bears the name of George E. Davis, the founder of our discipline. This award is particularly meaningful to me since Davis delivered his first lectures in chemical engineering in Manchester. I am also grateful to my Sustainable Industrial Systems group at Manchester University and to the many academic and industrial collaborators who have contributed to and supported my work over the years."   Source
