Solvay Unveils Breakthrough Solution for PVDC Recycling
Solvay Develops Breakthrough Solution for PVDC Recycling
Solvay, a science company providing high-performance materials for safe and reliable food packaging, has demonstrated a concept proving the recyclability potential of polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC). PVDC is used in multi-layer barrier packaging for food, beverage and healthcare applications worldwide.
The proof of concept involves recycling Ixan® PVDC cast film from a post-industrial waste source from food packaging without compromising the performance of the high-barrier polymer. This marks an important step toward more sustainable and circular packaging applications, with potential to initiate other initiatives such as recycling of post-consumer packaging containing PVDC.
Claire Guerrero, Global Marketing Manager for Solvay's Packaging Segment and Sustainability, said: "The proof of concept developed by our research team is a solution for PVDC packaging circularity. It demonstrates the possibility of reintegrating recycled polymer into future applications, meaning it can be reused and reblended with virgin materials without losing or compromising high-barrier properties."
