Smurfit Kappa Invests USD 23 Million in Mexico Smurfit Kappa is investing over USD 23 million in Mexico for a more sustainable future. Smurfit Kappa invested USD 23.5 million to convert its Nuevo Laredo sheet mill in Mexico into a fully integrated corrugated box plant. The investment includes a state-of-the-art corrugated box machine and building expansion. The new machine, which started operations in June 2022, will deliver dual benefits: reducing CO2 emissions by up to 40 percent and doubling production capacity. The Nuevo Laredo facility is located in Tamaulipas region in Northeast Mexico, where Smurfit Kappa maintains strong partnerships in the industrial, household electrical appliances and electronics sectors. The region represents 3.3 percent of the country's GDP and hosts over 200 companies manufacturing products for the United States. The increased capacity will streamline Smurfit Kappa's operations at its facilities in San Antonio, Texas, where rapidly growing demand for sustainable packaging requires larger production volumes. The investment will also deliver significant progress towards the facility's ambitious sustainability targets. CO2 emissions will be reduced by up to 40 percent owing to considerably less transportation between the Nuevo Laredo and San Antonio plants. Laurent Sellier, CEO of Smurfit Kappa the Americas, commented on the investment: "This investment reinforces our commitment to being a significant player in Mexico's market growth.
