Nuh Çimento Project to Deliver Annual Diesel Fuel Savings of 1 Million Litres in Industry

Operating within the framework of carbon footprint reduction targets, Nuh Çimento will convert diesel-powered rock trucks used in cement operations to electric trucks equipped with ABB's high-technology products. The project is expected to achieve annual diesel fuel savings of 1 million litres. ABB and Nuh Çimento have partnered to convert rock trucks operating with zero emissions to full electric. Under this project, rock trucks will be converted entirely to electric vehicles, which is expected to reduce operating costs, increase transport efficiency and improve performance. The project will also prevent the emission of 2,450 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

Kamil Gökhan Bozkurt, Chief Executive Officer of Nuh Çimento Group, commented on the project. Noting that they are making efforts to reduce costs and environmental impacts through projects oriented towards low-carbon and alternative fuels, Bozkurt stated; "The diesel-to-electric conversion project of our rock trucks, which transport 4.5 million tons of raw materials annually, will set an example for both the mining and cement sectors. In addition to the economic benefit of unused diesel, the preference for electricity as a cleaner energy source will reduce our carbon emissions and eliminate our transportation-related carbon footprint."

Zero-Emission Targets Guide Project Implementation

Expressing confidence that the project, which will be realised with the technology and experience of ABB Turkey and ABB Global, will add value to both the company and the world, Bozkurt said; "Our partner operates with a zero-emission target in its operations and projects undertaken as part of the 2030 Global Sustainability objectives. High-efficiency energy products manufactured in our partner's advanced facilities will be used in this project. Under this project scope, our partner will be responsible for the supply of all equipment necessary for converting rock trucks to electric power – the traction system, battery pack, electric motor, vehicle control system, electric vehicle charging station – and system engineering."

Nuh Çimento is operating within the framework of targets to reduce carbon footprint in cement operations by 2030 and achieve net-zero emission goals. Thanks to this new step, energy will be saved; regenerative energy generated as rock trucks descend will recharge the batteries, thereby increasing the overall efficiency of the rock trucks and reducing charging requirements. Rock trucks used in Nuh Çimento mining sites for 30 years will now be included among fully electric-powered machines and will be used for many years to come.
