Rio Tinto Expands Aluminum Production

Rio Tinto Expanding Sustainable Aluminium Production Rio Tinto will invest USD 1.1 billion (CAD 1.4 billion) to expand its high-tech AP60 aluminium smelter equipped with low-carbon technology at Complexe Jonquière in Canada. The total investment includes approximately USD 113 million (CAD 150 million) in financial support provided by the Quebec government. This expansion will occur simultaneously with the phased closure of potrooms at the Arvida smelter at the same facility, enabling Rio Tinto to continue meeting customers' demand for low-carbon, high-quality aluminium for use in transportation, construction, electrical and consumer goods. AP60 smelter technology, developed by Rio Tinto's research and development teams, ranks among the most efficient and lowest-carbon technologies currently available at commercial scale. This technology, combined with hydroelectric power used in Rio Tinto's Canadian operations, produces greenhouse gas emissions at one-seventh the rate and half the emissions of the technology currently used at the Arvida smelter per tonne of aluminium.
