Petrol Ofisi Protects the Future of Water

Petrol Ofisi has entered into a partnership with the Biodiesel Industry Association. Through this collaboration, Petrol Ofisi is taking responsibility for the future of water. Used cooking oils are collected at special collection points established at Petrol Ofisi stations and are gathered by licensed waste vegetable oil collectors under the coordination of the Biodiesel Industry Association. The collected oils are then transported to recycling facilities. This process both contributes to the economy and protects clean water resources. According to conducted research, every 1 litre of used oil causes the contamination of 1 million litres of drinking water. In Turkey, 2 million tonnes of vegetable oil are consumed annually, and 90 out of 100 people pour the unconsumed portion of this oil, such as frying oil, down the drain. This is what causes water pollution.

Drinking Water Supply for 2.2 Million People to Be Preserved

As a result of the partnership between Petrol Ofisi and the Biodiesel Industry Association, used cooking oils collected at stations will be converted into biodiesel. For the project, which issues the call "Bring your used cooking oils to Petrol Ofisi for the future of water," the stations where these oils will be collected were selected from those located near residential areas and within the city to ensure ease of implementation. The project was launched at 31 Petrol Ofisi stations, and the project is expected to collect 45,000 litres of used cooking oil annually. Thanks to the collection of used cooking oils, the drinking water supply for approximately 2.2 million people will be kept clean. By converting this oil into biodiesel, carbon emissions will be reduced and contributions will be made to the economy. Petrol Ofisi CEO Selim Şiper made statements regarding the project. Şiper said, "As a company founded on national values, as a leader in the sectors we operate in, and as one of Turkey's three largest companies, 'contributing to the future' is among our most important objectives. The partnership we have established with the Biodiesel Industry Association is a fine example of this fundamental approach. Although the pandemic dominates much of the global agenda today, clean water is one of the world's most critical issues. We say that 'Petrol Ofisi stations are service centers.' Therefore, we are pleased to serve and contribute to such an important matter with such a correct solution."

Contribution to the Protection of the Environment and Human Health

Biodiesel Industry Association Chairman Selçuk Borovalı, noting that used cooking oils accumulated in homes will be recycled in an environmentally safe manner, emphasized that this project will serve as an example in the circular economy field. Borovalı stated: "With the project to be implemented through the partnership of the Biodiesel Industry Association and Petrol Ofisi, the collected vegetable waste oils will create import substitution once converted into biodiesel. It will enable the reduction of Turkey's carbon footprint in transportation and an increase in the share of renewable energy. In this process, where we will take another step closer to our country's zero waste target, we will also contribute to the protection of the environment and human health. With this project, we are launching a nationwide mobilization and aim to expand it throughout the country," Borovalı said.
