PepsiCo Receives Ministry-Approved ‘Zero Waste’ Certificate
PepsiCo has certified its zero-waste production principle, which it has maintained in Turkey for many years, aimed at building a stronger and more sustainable food system. Operating on a zero-waste basis for an extended period, PepsiCo Turkey has been certified with a Zero Waste Certificate by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization across 6 production facilities.
On its journey to achieving zero-carbon targets, PepsiCo Turkey has implemented numerous innovative approaches with strong environmental awareness, creating added value from waste generated at 6 factories—three beverage plants in İzmir, Çorlu and Adana, and three food plants in Kocaeli, Mersin and Manisa—thereby contributing to the circular economy.
At the biogas facilities implemented at PepsiCo Turkey's Kocaeli (Suadiye) and Mersin (Tarsus) plants, potato peels, corn, starch and vegetable oil waste are collected to generate energy for use in the factories. Subsequently, with the aid of technology, the remaining waste is converted into a specialized fertilizer named 'Naturalis' by PepsiCo Turkey for use by potato producers in their next cultivation season.
With this project, which serves as a global example, CO2 emissions have been reduced by 11.5%, while chemical use in fertilizer production has been cut by 40%, minimizing negative impacts on soil and creating a circular economy model from field to factory. Additionally, biogas production and purification facilities at these plants are planned to use biogas instead of natural gas in production lines following biogas purification.
PepsiCo aims to ensure that all packaging consists of recyclable, biodegradable and compostable materials by 2025. Having achieved 90% of this target, PepsiCo is reducing its use of non-recycled plastic by 35% in line with its goal of ensuring no plastic and packaging becomes waste by 2025. In its Turkish operations, PepsiCo has transitioned to 50% recycled PET usage in carbonated beverages as of this year and has reached 25% recycled plastic use across all plastic packaging, continuously pursuing efforts to reduce plastic waste.
