PepsiCo Takes Action Against Climate Change
PepsiCo Tackles Climate Change
PepsiCo, one of the world's largest food and beverage companies, continues its efforts toward a sustainable food system and climate change mitigation under the Positive Value Chain, one of the focus areas of pep+, the end-to-end strategic transformation it launched last year.
PepsiCo focuses on three areas under PepsiCo Positive (pep+), its end-to-end transformation strategy announced last year to build a sustainable food system, help restore the planet, and mitigate the effects of climate change: Positive Agriculture, Positive Value Chain, and Positive Choices.
Speaking about PepsiCo's climate change mitigation efforts on the occasion of 22 April Earth Day, PepsiCo Turkey General Manager Ece Aksel said: "To reduce the effects of climate change and build a sustainable food system, we need to view the ecosystem holistically. This is possible only through end-to-end strategic thinking and changing how we do business. I believe that when sectors whose operations intersect take action, a broad impact can be created, and I am optimistic about our future."
Turkey Leads in Recycled PET Use
Ece Aksel stated that under its Positive Value Chain heading, PepsiCo is committed to helping create a circular and inclusive economy through its work under various initiatives, including 'Sustainable Packaging,' 'Net Zero Emissions,' and 'Net Water Positive Target.' "As PepsiCo, we aim to reduce virgin plastic per portion in our global food and beverage portfolio by 50% by 2030. Additionally, we continue our efforts to design 100% of our packaging by 2025 to be recyclable, compostable, biodegradable, or reusable. As the Turkey business unit, we are already among the leading companies in recycled PET use. Our 1-litre Pepsi, Yedigün, and Fruko PET bottles in Turkey are produced from 100% recycled plastic," she said. In addition to sustainable packaging, PepsiCo is transforming resource use and aims to reach net zero emissions by 2040 in its global operations. PepsiCo, which receives the most significant contribution from renewable energy investments in this regard, transitioned all 6 of its factories in Turkey to 100% renewable electricity as of 2021. In line with its "Net Water Positive Target," PepsiCo aims to reduce absolute water use globally by 2030 and return more than 100% of the water used in high-risk areas back to nature. Through projects developed in this context, the company has achieved a 50% reduction in per-unit water use in agriculture. The company has also reduced water use by 18% in food factories and 24% in beverage production.Advertisement
