The Blue Climate Ambassadors Project's Second Stop Was Mersin
Deniz Temiz Derneği/TURMEPA, Türkiye Liman İşletmecileri Derneği (TÜRKLİM) and the International Association of Women in Maritime Trade 'WISTA Türkiye' launched the 'Blue Climate Ambassadors Project' to draw attention to the increasing climate change events worldwide and develop sustainable solutions to environmental problems. Following Antalya, the project's second stop was Mersin.
Mersin International Port (MIP), which works towards a more sustainable future and gender equality, supported the project. The project draws attention to the effects of climate change in Turkey while highlighting women seafarers and encouraging them to develop sustainable solutions to environmental problems.
Within the framework of the project implemented at Mersin Port with MIP's support, port employees received "Zero Waste Blue" training from TURMEPA. Port employees who received the training gained knowledge on issues such as "zero waste, zero waste blue, carbon footprint, reduction of plastic consumption, energy and water conservation" and measures to be taken for improvement both at the port and in the region.
Three women employees selected as ambassadors will assume responsibility for providing climate change awareness training to all employees at their port within one year. They will take a leading role at the port, conduct awareness and consciousness-raising activities, and lead the development of institutional solutions in zero waste and climate change mitigation.
The project's next step will be a coastal cleanup event to be held in the region in autumn.
Mersin International Port Operations (MIP) General Manager Johan Van Daele, who supported the Mersin stop of the 'Blue Climate Ambassadors Project', made the following statements:
"We are proud to be part of this special project that draws attention to such an important issue as climate change and brings women workers in the maritime sector to the forefront.
As MIP, we carry out many environmental and social activities under the sustainability umbrella and strive to fulfill our responsibilities towards nature and society. With this project launched by TURMEPA with TÜRKLİM and WISTA Türkiye, we find it highly valuable for 'Blue Climate Ambassador' women workers to lead the way in combating climate change.
We also attach importance to the position of our women in professional life and believe in the strength of diversity in the sector. In the coming period, we will continue to add value to Mersin and its people through projects focused on environment, sustainability and gender equality."
