L'Oréal Türkiye's Sustainability Revolution
L'Oréal Turkey's Sustainability Revolution
L'Oréal Turkey, advocating for urgent action on water conservation globally and in Turkey, is making another first in the country's beauty market and transforming its Istanbul production facility into a "Water-Recycling Water-Friendly Factory."
L'Oréal Turkey's Istanbul facility, which produces 51 million units of shampoo and hair conditioner annually, will recycle and reuse 100% of industrial water used in the production phase within a closed-loop system.
L'Oréal Turkey has become the 7th country in the L'Oréal Group, which has a total of 40 factories, to complete its transformation into a water-recycling water-friendly factory. Following Mexico, Spain, Russia, Italy, Belgium, China, and most recently Turkey, 100% of L'Oréal Group factories will be converted into water-recycling water-friendly facilities by 2030.
With this concrete step, L'Oréal Turkey aims to set an example for different sectors in Turkey, contribute to raising awareness about water cycle solutions, and pave the way for other companies to establish their own water-friendly factories. L'Oréal Turkey also commits to sharing all experiences gained during the 2.5-year transformation process into a "Water-Recycling Water-Friendly Factory" with all companies seeking to make sustainable investments and develop innovative solutions.
"We want to provide the best beauty products and services while also making a positive contribution to society and the environment"
Sinem Sandıkçı Gökçen, General Director of L'Oréal Turkey, emphasizing the company's full efforts to realize the vision of "Creating Beauty That Moves the World," stated: "As L'Oréal Turkey, through our work we are making a significant contribution to achieving the goals of our global sustainability program 'L'Oréal for the Future.' With our SUSTAINABILITY REVOLUTION, which we have implemented with great dedication in Turkey, we continue to develop projects in every possible area, particularly water conservation. At the very beginning of this year, we are excited to present to you our water-recycling water-friendly factory, which we will implement as a first in Turkey's beauty sector. In our factory, which represents a concrete contribution to the future of Turkey and Istanbul, by reusing all the industrial water we use, we will save 10 million liters of water annually against the water scarcity threat we face in our country. As L'Oréal Turkey, remaining committed to our vision of 'Creating Beauty That Moves the World,' we will continue to work passionately and demonstrate positive contributions in every aspect for our planet, our country, and the society we are part of. We see leading in sustainability as a responsibility we owe to the generations that come after us, and we achieve this by placing sustainability at the center of our business model and strategy. We believe that both our consumers and our business partners have duties, and we all have responsibilities. As we always say, the only condition to create a real difference is to act collectively and comprehensively, all together. On this occasion, we thank everyone who contributed to this valuable project and hope it will be an encouraging and good example for all sectors." he said. Güven İslamoğlu: "The world is a living organism; it breathes in and out. We also breathe in and out with it. We are a part of the whole. However, this whole is at risk because of our consumption habits. Therefore, human existence in this world is also at risk. To sustain our lives, we still depend on many other species. Let us appreciate this value... Solutions exist but we are not taking action. Over the last 7 years, we have broken temperature records. Even the record itself has a limit for the world, and we have approached that limit. The most fundamental point in combating this crisis is the efficient and appropriate use of all resources. Sustainability becomes essential at this point. I sincerely congratulate L'Oréal Turkey for taking responsibility and making a difference with its Water-Recycling Water-Friendly Factory. I hope it will serve as an example for other sectors and companies." M. Serdar Kuzuloğlu: "We live with concepts that feed each other such as transparency, sustainability, and awareness. Awareness is the inevitable consequence of transparency. Its most significant global outcome is the sustainability theme. We have created an unsustainable world order. Yet we still address sustainability as if there were an alternative to it. With bitter experiences we have lived through, we have been convinced otherwise. Technology is the most determining factor in both the cause and solution of this order. Even our individual technology use leaves digital footprints in massively energy-consuming data centers. Yet it is possible to use the same technologies as a transformative and changing force. We are transitioning from a system prioritizing consumption to one where we are forced into conscious use. Some pioneering companies have a key role with their transformative power and influence. A transformed factory can save 10 million liters of water; in other words, equivalent to the daily consumption of approximately 53,000 Istanbul residents; a shower head can save up to 69% water; or we can see how lipstick stays on lips without even applying it. Through this, we have understood. Technology by its nature enables measurability. The resulting data reveals waste and provides a roadmap for making our processes more efficient. I believe that L'Oréal Turkey's successes in this effort will scale and create a much larger impact." he said.Groundbreaking Award-Winning Technology: Gjosa Water Saver Shower Head Saving Up to 69% Water
To take urgent action on water conservation, L'Oréal Group, the Techno-Beauty leader leveraging technology, developed the Water Saver shower head that saves up to 69% water in collaboration with environmental innovation company Gjosa. Created to provide a concrete response to the growing global water scarcity, this shower head is among the products recognized with the Time Best Inventions 2021 award in the beauty category. The Gjosa shower head, developed for use in hair salons, is installed directly in wash basins in hair-washing areas, operates by creating high-pressure, colliding micro-ionized water droplets, and can reduce water consumption by up to 69% in each wash. With this feature, Gjosa is the world's first shower head utilizing water fragmentation technology. With the Water Saver head, rinsing shampoo from hair requires only 2.74 liters of water instead of 7 liters. If 100,000 hairdressers use L'Oréal Gjosa technology, up to 6.8 billion liters of water can be saved.
